That is the USN PHM hydrofoil that you are referring to. Their Key West duty was their only real deployment after they were constructed, originally as fast attack craft with anti-ship missiles. Incredibly capable machines but with high cost of operation and maintenance, they were unceremoniously scrapped by the navy quite a few years back. One survives in the hands of private owners who hope to restore it to operational condition..a lofty goal.

But powered hydrofoils are 'not dead yet'..here's a shot of one (of the slender monhul, ama-stablised off foil variety) that is still around ( a model/test craft) and a larger version is being built in Norway.

This hydrofoil has been in development for awhile now. Originally slated for 1500hp gas engines, Turbine Marine in Pompano Beach, Fl. has been contracted to fit their Lycoming 1400-1800hp motors.

Carl have you seen this craft out testing?

To the best of my knowledge, only r/c models have been built of the Zytoran. Ken Cook, an expert in the field and president of Hydrofoils, Inc., mocked up an open cockpit, 1/2 scale version of the concept and used it as a test-mule some years ago. I haven't spoken with Ken in ages, so I don't know the status of development.

    Triton Warship

At one time I was very interested in what might become of this experiment being carried out jointly with the British and USA navies. I've not heard much of the results, although I was always concerned that the USA might just say' not invented here' and move on.

So my question is did anyone ever hear some solid data on this experiment??

One of my reasons for asking relates to this superyacht projection:

Looks like the real thing has been built because Turbine Marine has an announcement about it on their site. All it shows is the pic on Cook's site but I think John Arruda probably went to see the boat, then put it on his site. I'll call John tomorrow and get the scoop.

    Prout Tri-strike Concept

Appearing more like the original Navy project, here is the announced Prout Tristrike project.

    The Tristrike 420 Project

Michael Ferris, Director of Prout International Super Yacht Division has announced to the Tristrike 420 Project. This 420’/128m tri-hull, motor yacht intended for all oceans, long range, and expedition passage making. Based on a proven military design heritage the Tristrike platform is a “mind blowing” 128m / 420’ X 27.5m / 90’.

    Wave Piercers: Pros and cons.

Have recently been looking at the wave piercer designs and can't understand why they do not appear to have become more popular. Is it because the design is too radical !!! The main company seem to be New Zealand Yachts; and although they have designed several models none seem to be in production. Is there a basic flaw in the handling of these yachts or is just that no mainstream shipyard has taken the bold step of building one.

More importantly for motoryacht use, unless you have a giant high lumbering behemoth of tremendous beam, you're going to leave it docked when the seas kick up. It doesn't take more than a few tall waves slamming the center section to knock your fillings out and send you scurrying home.

    Trimaran motoryacht

FYI : Azurra Yachts (Australia) have an interesting build underway- a 93' high performance trimaran. You will see it on their website under Projects- Motoryachts.

Why do little rice burners have airfoils on the boot?

Why did 1960s American cars have tailfins? Because some stylist thought they looked good and some other fool thought they might actually do something.

That tail is going to catch every sidewind and slow that thing down. Whats that yacht called that some guy built, down in Florida I beleive, out of an old airliner fuselage?

It was named Cosmic Muffin when Jimmy Buffet owned it. Originally commissioned by Howard Hughes...

    Bahamas Wave Piercing Ferry

Took these pics of the Balearia Bahamas Express docked at the Western end of Dodge Island, the Port of Miami last week. The same company is also trying to setup Bahamas service from Port Everglades in Ft. Lauderdale and then later to Cuba. http://blogs.sun-sentinel.com/south-florida-travel/2011/08/19/port-everglades-courts-ferry-to-bahamas-later-to-cuba/ She can carry up to 463 passengers and 80 vehicles.

Unless I was James Bond I would sure hate to find myself infront of or underneath this 74m x 26m behemoth.
