87 2757 montego head wont pump

    I recently purchased a 1987 2757 Montego, twin Alpha 180’s. She’s in great shape, having been stored up for the last few years, now just needing some TLC. I had her tuned and prepped, and she’s been in the water this summer, now I need help in understanding some of the basic operations of the boat head.

    While filling the gas tanks, I attempted to get the head vacuumed but no draw occurred. I know the head holding tank was empty while the boat was being stored . The head was since utilized and I know the holding tank was at least ¾ full. Perhaps during storage, something was closed that does not allow me to draw off the waste??

    The head has foot pedal that rotates a ball value. When in the open position, I can see the holding tank below. Is there a way to determine that there is an additional storage tank?

    Also, please tell me why there is a shut off valve leading to an alternative exit port immediately prior to the waste exit port on the starboard aft side. Is this a direct dump port? Is there another vent somewhere that I need to open?

    The Y-valve leads to an overboard dump. There is nothing that needs to be done other than hook up the hose and pump. It sounds like you have a bad seal that's preventing you from forming a vacuum enabling you to pump out or a clog in the line. The later should be easy to figure out, and if not that, change your seals. There shouldn't be a 2nd holding tank on this boat, but explore. This is a fairly simple boat. Don't be afraid to open all you're hatches and look around.

    There should be a small hose coming off of the tank which is a vent line check to see if it is clogged. If it is this will prevent pumping. Also if there is a charcoal filter in line it may be clogged as well.

    My wife and I just bought our first boat. a 1987 Carver Santego 2767, which I believe is the same hull and most of the same systems you have. Here is an owner's manual for our boats, which also covers 4 other models.

    I had the exact same issue with my head and here is what I did. First, I disconnected the vent line from the top of the tank and made sure the opening was clear into the tank. I tried pumping out the tank again with no luck. I then made sure the vent line itself was clear all the way through the hull and checked the through hull fitting for debris, webs, etc. and reconnected the line to the tank

    Next I used a household snake with a fitting on the end that was rounded over so as to not perforate the discharge hose. I marked on the snake where I thought I would have to insert it to so I would know I was at the beginning of the tank. Going in through the pump-out fitting, I very slowly and carefully inserted it in and sure enough, hit an obstruction just where the tank was. I felt it poke through and heard sloshing, cranked it around a few times and then went and pumped it out with no problem.

    Just be very careful if you go the snake route. The discharge hose is fairly thick and rugged but, as in my case, is probably as old as the boat.

    Also...please read through the manual. There seems to be some models (Raritan Crown electric) with a primary, 9 gal. tank under the head and a secondary, 20 gal. tank. My boat seems to fall, into this category but I really am not too sure I have the primary holding tank under the head. My large tank is access through the Vee berth and is portside of the A/C unit.
