hatteras 50 convertible can you gentleman please elaborate on why you like the older 60s better than the new ones. thanks Mark
The old 1980 era 60 was rolling pig of a boat ... the newer 60 got a lot better around 1998 and the current GT60 drives like a dream. At the risk of upsetting Viking owners I think the current Hatteras GT's are the best production sportsfisherman on the market. The best of the larger older Hatteras boats was the 55' ...It didn't roll as much as the old 53' and was better layed out and easier to work on. These can be picked up in reasonable condition for peanuts these days. Well worth a look.
Yeah, they were so bad (old 60's) at rolling that they added the chines/rails to the hull all of the way down where there hull side met the bottom, they still rolled after this. I haven't run a new 60, but hear good things about it. The newer 54's are a great running boat and I'd venture to say best riding production sportfish in it's size.
The only problem with them is they have too much horsepower, people are too concerned about tearing around at 40 knots.
They cruise in the low to mid 30's. However, you can always run slower if you'd like, it's kind of hard to run faster then whatever cruise speed the boat is made for.
Yeah but still I'd prefer to have C18's over C32's .If you don't need the speed you still saving weight, space, fuel with smaller engines and improving your range. I have no need to use a extra 1600hp and 200 gph to get a extra 7 knots speed. I'm happy enough cruising at 25-27 knots burning less fuel. Where I need a boat to be quick is in reverse ....
I agree with all the above except the 12cylinder CATS are a better engine than the 6's are. BTW/I ran a 65 Viking with a pair of 12's and the burn was 115 gal an hour.A huge amount of fuel but it wasn't 200.
The question I'd have is why bother ? I'm far more interested in how a boat turns and burns on a fish and how it tracks in a big following sea then how fast it can go flat out. The 63GT is a nice boat indeed.
Such is true, but speed also helps reaching certain fishing grounds and locations in a matter of time that wouldn't be feasible in a 20 knot boat.
I guess in some places it might help but here you would have 1 day in 10 where you could run the boat over 30knots without pounding it to bits.
Nice Informative video of Hatteras 60gt Nice video of Hatteras sportfisherman 60gt See video below: HATTERAS YACHT 60 GT - YouTube
I ran the new Hatteras 60 GT a month ago or so. It was a good riding boat and handles very well when backing down and doing other fishing maneuvers.
1984 Hatteras 60 CaptJ i am considering the purchase of a mid 80's Hatteras 60 EB. I read your post and wanted to know if you could elaborate some more on the good and bad points for this model.
