I am looking at 52' Viking Convertibles and would like to hear comments on this model and Man Engines. Specifically 1050HP vs 1300HP.

    52 viking convertible

I have owned and operated a 52 viking with the 1360 MANs for nearly 4 years and I cannot say enough good things about the boat. Viking made about 100 52 convertibles and the 52 hull is still being used on the express and the sport yacht so I believe it is Vikings most successful hull. It is because so many of them were made that there are so many of them on the market. In other words, you should be able to get a great deal on an amazing boat.

Also, people within Viking shared with me their belief that the 52 was the smallest boat that was built with the quality of the larger vikings during the years in which it was produced. I was told that the 45 and 48 were not built as well as the 52, and I believe it because there are people at Viking that personally own 52's. I also know of an owner of certified MAN service company that owns a 52 with the 1300's. The fact that professionals working in the sportfish industry own 52's speaks volumes.

Try to get the largest engines possible. Sportfishermen without the largest engine package available are very difficult to resell. Might as well get the 12 cylinders and run the boat at a lower load.

I believe that performance numbers between the 1300's and 1360's are nearly identical. You can expect a 33 knot cruise at 1950RPM (90 gph) and close to 40 knots at WOT (140 GPH). I usually run it at 26 knots (1675 RPM and 65 GPH).

I have not had any major mechanical problems with the engines whatsoever and it has been the best boat that I have owned by far.

Feel free to contact me with any specific questions about the 52.
