Looking to get into the big boat arena. I am looking at an 1997 or 1998 Ocean 53 SS. does anybody have any info on this model? I don't plan to fish offshore much. mostly cruising and some Chesapeake Bay (rockfish) fishing. Also looking at a 1992 54 Hatteras.

I have been the captain on a 1992 53 ss since 1994, logging 4000+ hours and very highly praise the boat. She is a superb sea boat, nimble, stable and fast and remarkably dry. I have run her from New England to Rum Cay and fished numerous tournaments and have nothing but good things to say about her. She's very comfortable as a cruising yacht, we usually have 2 couples plus myself aboard, and the accommodations are very nice. 3 stateroom, 2 head layout. Well equipped galley, including a conventional oven, which is becoming a rarity these days. We recently removed the dishwasher and replaced it with a 2nd undercounter refrigerator, which is very useful.
I ran an 89 52 Hatteras for six years from new until '94 and loved her too!
    Good luck in your search.

Thanks Tom. I like the Ocean also but the wife did not. Enough said. About too pull the trigger on a 2004 48/50 Silverton Convt. Smaller cockpit but adds to the salon. Can still fish though. Any input on the Silverton? Gonna cruise more than fish.

    Thanks,
    Tim

Oceans are cool boats. I could go on and on, but I won't unless asked to do so. However I have never met a boat I didn't think was cool so I am biased. Obviously some are of better quality and such, but they are all better at relieving stress than anything else I know of.

Come on Ocean people. Get on the net and talk about your boats! This forum is going stale.

And my advise to the OP is to get your wife down in the love shack on the Ocean for a night and then the Silverton and then decide.

I can't comment specifically on the 48 but I knew someone who had a 42 and the interior was literally coming apart in numerous places at the ripe old age of 5. They used it exclusively on the LI Sound which can be rough at times.
