CAT 3408 Stop not working

    Hi and Merry X Mass to everyone out there.

    I have two CAT 3408 onboard, the one engine does not want to shutdown with the stop switch in the Wheelhouse/Engine room or any of the wind stations.

    My assumption is that it is obviously a common issue. I have read the manual and there is a junction box with a few relays to energize and the fuel shutoff solenoid.

    I have not opened up the junction box yet to have a look, but what do you folks reckon??? At times it is intermittent, sometimes it shutsdown and sometimes not. This is a recent problem?

    Any thoughts, I hope to open up the junction box 2 morrow to look and maybe swap out the relays to the other engine to try isolate the isssue to the relays that energize the fuel shutoff solenoid.

    Anyways I hope to hear some thoughts from those more experienced guys out there

    I had the same problem a while back with a 3208... and it was indeed the solenoid. I can't remember what CAT service exactly did but I think they changed the whole thing and I do remember that they were not very surprised at all - seems to be a fairly common problem...

    Yep. same problem on another Cat at the moment. Shut-off solinoid down by the fuel cooler corroded up and needs replacing, new one on the way for about $250.

    This is the second time in 4 years.

    Since the shutoff does not work from any station, it is most likely the solenoid or the shut off actuator itself. You should check the solenoid for its main voltage and then push the stop button and see if you get a voltage control signal (on one of the small terminals). The solenoid can be easily "jumpered" with a remote starter switch or even a screw driver across the correct solenoid terminals. You should here it click and then the stop actuator rod on the injection should actuate. You can put a volt meter on the actuator as well if the solenoid appears to be working. On my 3208 TAs the starter and stop solenoids are near each so make sure to test the correct one.

    Make sure the pin has not dropped out of the soleniod actuator rod ?

    Nice to hear all your thoughts, well the problem seems to be intermittent.

    I am thinking that the problem occurs when the engine heats up and the solenoid becomes more unreliable.

    I am looking at replacing them on both engines

    (A bit late answer, hopefully your problem is solved now but anyway...)

    One of our (old) 3408 had a similar problem. It turned out to be worn thread on the terminal on the solenoid causing the nut to loosen. Actually not as obvious as it may seem since you had to wiggle it to reproduce the fault.

    May save you from replacing the solenoids.
