It is so ugly it's not even floating, it is being rejected by the water!

    So Jealous!!!

Hi Aquamarine, I am very excited for you. I just love Opal C. She is so unique I would not change much other than to update the audio/visual equipment to large flat screens with surround sound/music/video server, new headboard covers and duvees on all the beds including the captain's cabin, cosmetic updates to the crew quarters/mess to keep them happy. But I would leave everything else, the custom headboards, bedside tables, lav vanity and mirrors etc with the rounded corners that lend a very timeless and cool art deco feeling to the boat. The spoiler is what makes the boat for me, I hope you keep it and hang a disco ball from it for late night entertaining on the fantail! If she is in good shape otherwise and does not need lots of electronic and mechanical updates/upgrades you will be getting a lot of boat for not much money compared to other yachts in her price range. Better hope I do not win the lottery before you seal a deal! Please let me know how things end up.

Can you give some details about the hull and superstructure blisters you mentioned?

Some one is brave. Both MTUs over 5000hours and the starboard motor overdue for her W6 which will require cubic dollars/euros.

K1W1, care to take a guess at how much?

Hi Aquamarine, Have you done your survey yet? How does she look? When will you be taking delivery?

    Hi,
Yes an extensive survey has been done, the outcome is of course confidential but for your information I am still in discussion for the purchase. I am very surprised to read the comments above which for most part of them do not match with the reality of the yacht. I will keep you posted if I finalize the purchase.

    Hi,

Most of the comments above yours comment on the styling or in some peoples lack of it.

The only one that points to a definite spoiler is Lorens one at No 28 above.

This is a VERY VALID observation.

If the boat shows that the engines are all maintained as per MTU Recommendations and nothing large is due please do yourself a favour and contact MTU directly and find out what info they have for them.

An Example of this I can give is this:

I was working with a client who looked at a number of different vessels amongst them was an ex Fred Olsen Lines Waterjet Ferry. It was being offered for sale by a Greek Operator. It was powered with 4 of the MTU 20V 1163 Series family of engines.

The engines were reported as having done mid 20,000 hrs and all were claimed to have had W6 Overhauls in the proceeding 6 months.

Through a colleague I found that MTU had no record of any parts supplied to these engines for several years and also that the blocks were beyond overhaul with that many hours and would also require replacing.

The Client wanted to use it somewhere on the West Coast of Africa on a run of approx 24 hrs each way. He did not seem to understand the implications of what was due with the information I uncovered but accepted my advice to stay away from it.

A W6 is the biggie often requiring the engine to be pulled out and sent back to MTU.

    Hi K1W1,
I was referring to the comments on the engines, the general look of the yacht is a matter of taste indeed. Thanks for your feedback regarding your previous experience and you are right that what's claimed by a seller does not always reflect the reality...In fact I have already contacted MTU local agent as well as MTU factory in Germany who gave me a full report on the engines history and maintenance.

Hi Discokachina, I have finally purchased Opal C, after all documentation completed, the yacht will be shipped to Thailand probably by the end of September and she should be ready for the Charter season by mid November.

Hi Aquamarine, Congratulations! I am glad to hear that she is in the hands of someone who will be sharing her in the charter market. Can you post some charter info, pics after any updates have been made, etc so we can see how she looks in her new home?

    Has it now sold?

    http://*********************/luxury-yachts-for-sale/opal-c-172/tenders-toys.htm

is still showing this baby on the market - did things fall through?

The feature I always liked from when she was first launched was the inside/outside dining area. Yes it's a little J Bond, but as a family yacht I'd be buying this, assuming I had the cash, and the not inconsiderable extra to shell out on a Med berth large enough - nearly as much as the asking price again!

Style is a great thing, and sure there are modern yachts that are prettier now, but this is a classic - alongside Southern Cross III that was on the market recently. The main issue is that they are VERY expensive to run, crew / fuel / service, but hey a Ferrari 250 GTO makes this seem good value.

Love to hear more about her - NB if the lottery pays out I may just buy her myself - have to convince my wife though, children already happy with the prospect!

    thanks for reading

    Adrian
