Just curious if there are any other Great Lakes boaters on the forum. I boat out of Huron Ohio on Lake Erie with my 1986 34' Silverton Convertible.

    Lake Michigan boater

    Hi,
We have spent many hours on Lake Michigan and Lake Huron. I have never boated lake Erie, but understand the fishing is very good.

A few of our friends have run to Put in Bay and the Erie Island and speak very favorably of the experience.

    Think WARM and boating season!

Spent 10 years cruising Lake Superior, then through the lakes (except Michigan) to the N.Y. State Canal System, Hudson R. & south.
Superior is GREAT - but COLD!

    Michigan's Great Lake

I've been cruising these waters for over 30 years and love this area. Many ports to hit without spending all day cruising. We also enjoy going to the North Channel (North Lake Huron) once a year. If you have ever thought of going there, do it you'll never stop going.

We enjoy escaping to Fish Creek, Wisconsin in Door County for quick weekends. Only 42 sm, it's a quick rejuvenation for our souls.

Great Lakes are wonderful. I cruise Lake Superior last 25 years. Last summer bought a Post 46 in Conneticut and brought it back through Great Lakes. Wonderful trip! Water is very hard right now. Think warm and soft water!:)

We boat out of Michigan City, IN. (southern tip lake Michigan). Travel Lake Mich, Lake Huron, North Channel quite a bit, and poked into Lake Superior couple of years ago. Looking to do the Great Circle sometime soon.

    Hi Jack,

I have only been boating at Lake Erie for about three seasons now. I have a 1986 34' Silverton Convertible. I am looking so forward to the season this year since I joined the South Shore Cruising Club and will try to make some of their trips. My boat is Named JETLAG so look for me this season. I dock at Holiday Harbor Marina just off the Huron River south of the railroad tracks.

I cruise the Great Lakes all the time and have for the last 5 years. I spend 3 weeks in the North Channel (Lake Huron) every year. I own a 310 Searay Sundancer. I am out of Decker's Landing on the North Channel of Lake St Clair. :)

    Great Lake Boating

    Hey,

I own a 37' Chris Craft Roamer Motoryacht and 28' Chris Craft Catalina and boat out of Beach Grove CC in Windsor, ON on Lake St. Clair. We also boat out of the Detroit Yacht Club as well.

We are planning on taking a 2 week trip through the North Channel and Huron up to Georgian Bay as we have a cottage in Midland, ON.

Any ideas, suggestions and or tips would be greatly appreciated!

    North Channel Trip

    Matt,

You're going to really enjoy the trip! We've been up to the North channel 4 times, and have really enjoyed each trip. Deffinitely not to be missed:

    1. Killarney, has the sportsman's club, neat place that really caters to boaters. Great dinner with live entertainment each evening.

    2. Baie Fine and the Pool. This is really cool, you go down this long Fiord (be very careful at the entrance, we have posted someone on the bow to look for rocks). If you're lucky, Frances Langford (films star and wife of Ralph Evinrude) will be aboard her megayacht which slips there, the "Chanticleer". The pool is a great anchorage not to be missed.

    3. Benjamin Islands, be sure to anchor there. It's like something from a different world, huge slabs of rock with lots of protection from winds, etc. Dead silent at night. Be careful entering (as anywhere in the North Channel), watch out for the rocks "sow and pigs."

    4. A good place to check back in to US is Drummond Island, very nice people, who always seem to have 4 or 5 vessels "on the hard" for repairs. (Refer to no. 3 above.)

    5. Gore Bay is a neat town, eat at the "twin gables" (I think it's called, reminds me of the old tv series "twin peaks". Once at Gore Bay I heard a quarter drop into a Pepsi machine, FROM A BLOCK AWAY!!

    6. Kagawong is great, has really neat water falls you can walk to , and get behind.

    7. If you have the time, you can make the run up to Sault Ste Marie locks, on the Canadian side is a very nice marina named after a female astronaut, (Patricia Bondar, I believe), lots of live music, and near a shopping mall.
The US marina is nice too, it's new, but to us, the US side seemed economically depressed when we were there a couple years ago.

8.. Of course, Mac Island is not to be missed, and is within 40 miles of the North Channel. If you plan to go there, make reservations now through the Michigan DNR, they're on the net.

If you get on the net, you can order a comprehensive package of tourism brochures, etc.about the North Channel Mine came in about 2 weeks.

Have a great trip!! Think Spring!!

Thanks for all the info! One more question...is there a site and or a list of Yacht Clubs in the Huron/Georgian Bay area. I am a member of the Detroit Yacht Club and would like to take advantage of reciprocity if at all possible. Any nice clubs you can suggest?

I noticed you are a Commodore of the Lake Michigan Yachting Association and figured you'd have some insight.

    Thanks again,

    34 Silverton

A friend is looking at a 34 Silverton. Did they make one with a second bunk room?
If so what year did they start. If I recall they made a hull change, does anyone know the year and is there any problem with the old style hull.
