In the 60's and early 70's my uncle lived-aboard his yacht in Daytona. He was the Commodore of the Daytona Yacht Club. He and my aunt lived on the boat for some 15 years. She was a 50'+ Chris Craft wooden hull with twin Detroit diesels. Her name was the KAREB III. Any idea of how I would go-about finding what happened to her? He (my uncle) is in his late 80's right now. It would mean quite a lot to get him some info if she were still afloat. Thanks for any and all assistance - Mike
I looked her up in the 1975 edition of Lloyds Register of American Yachts and did not find her under Kareb III, either as a then current listing or former name. I have some older editions of Lloyds at my office and can check those this coming week. Perhaps she is listed in an earlier volume. The yacht club may have old membership data that shows her Coast Guard document #. That's really what you need to see where she may have gone.
Thank you, I didn't think about contacting the Yacht Club. He and my aunt loved that boat. My first cruise was aboard. After my first tour in Southeast Asia, He and my aunt hosted my first wife and I for a three week cruise to the islands. I was taught navigation and boat handling on that beautiful vessel.
I have looked in every edition of Lloyds that I have. No "Kareb III" The only way to perhaps trace her ownership would be to know her six digit Doc#. Did your uncle buy the boat new? If not, perhaps he remembers her former name. She may have been listed in Lloyds before or after his ownership under a different name.
I've written to the Yacht Club and haven't received a response. I'll call my Uncle this weekend - his birthday is in May (he'll be 89) and I wanted to prepare a package of 'stuff' for him. His memory isn't quite as sharp as it once-was, but we'll see what he remembers. Thank you for trying - I do appreciate it. Mike
Just a thought. Perhaps your Uncle may still have saved his papers on the yacht? And DOC # may listed within these papers. I had a Grandfather, that saved EVERYTHING!! Dan.
