True, switching power supplies are very efficient. Kind of the way to go nowadays. Case in point, PC power supplies are breaking the kilo-watt range in a fairly compact space. They are inexpensive too, but I wouldn't want to use a PC power supply in an environment that isn't temperature and humidity controlled (I am not referring specifically to the power supply Marmot referenced).

Perhaps I've drunk the Kool-Aid when it comes to marine electronics, but I have been involved in building high reliability electronic systems for harsh environments. Doing it right isn't cheap. That said, expensive doesn't mean good either!

If the power supply is going inside a cabin, it really doesn't matter as much. If it is in an enclosed but unsealed outdoor space, without some level of environmental design, it will be a maintenance headache.

A simple stereo upgrade turns into a minor project! The iPOD is sounding better! ;)

On a related note, most marine stereo head units are crap. They are barely water resistant, and that is on the front panel only. I've replaced two of the SONY units in under 12 months. Check out Fusion Audio's marine products. The are water resistant to spec, on the front and the back. They aren't even expensively priced.

This got me thinking... What differentiates a Registered User and a Senior Member?

In addition to a post count over 100... Knowledge & Contribution. Some people reach geriatric status within 10 posts. Some may never grow old. ;)

I think 3 or 400 watts ought to be enough to rock a few boats!
