There are a ton of electronics stores in Manhattan, but it is not a yachting city. I can only think of two stores in NYC that might carry the part, but more likely it's a special order item.

Try www.newyorknautical.com and www.westmarine.com - your best bet may be to call ahead so it can be shipped to the store if needed.

The prices on electronics like a handheld GPS like that Garmin are pretty much the same from store to store.......Outdoor World in Dania Beach, FL or a West Marine would be the place to probably find it in stock.......

The Sales Tax is in addition to the product price.

Florida's Sales Tax (in lieu of European VAT) is established by each locality, but I think should be around 6%. Perhaps someone on the east coast of Florida can confirm the rate in Miami-Dade.

Ditto posting the New York Sales Tax rate.

You can check West Marine store locations at http://syr-area.com/westmarine6.html NYC has an 8.875% sales tax (highest in the state). New Jersey is around 7%.
If you don't have a car available there's the SeaStreak ferry to Atlantic Highland which takes you through NY Harbor, under the Verizano and across Raritan Bay. So you could take in some sightseeing along the way. There's also water taxis that cross the Hudson as well a trains under. Not too many people shop for marine electronics in NYC.
Personally, I think you'll do better price-wise, close location-wise and sales tax-wise in the Miami area.

You might be better off ordering it online and having it shipped to someone you know in one of the places you plan to stay. You can probably avoid all taxes and possibly avoid finding the things out of stock when you arrive.

Are you driving to Orlando from Miami? If so pm me. You can arrange to have it shipped to my office (a respectable international firm in Fort Lauderdale) and it can be held for you. We do this with a ton of stuff for a lot of yachts so it is not an unusual activity - or a way for me to get a nice new 600 :D

These guys have them for $1100:

If the store has a physical presence in the state, New York collects sales tax on all online orders, according to the tax rate of the destination jurisdiction.
