Servicing the raw water system on my Volvo TAMD 74p’s, I found damage/corrosion to the sealing surface of the heat exchanger housing. This has been leaking raw water at pressure and I’m worried it’s only a matter of time until it gets into my coolant if I don’t repair it. It seems impossible to buy a new housing - can only buy the full assembly with bundle, etc for $11,000!!! Does anyone know if this should be repairable via some sort of weld or braze? I’m not even sure what the material is.
I recall an O ring gasket. Do not take any heat to that alloy. Soldering in a bead will probably destroy the casting. Buba on the other side of the swamp would probably just use a better RTV. I would prefer something more rigid; Salt water side prevents the use of JB weld. A few drops of a better epoxy with surfacing thickener. Then shaping the surface with a home made sanding tool to re-make a flat O ring surface. Then RTV while assembling. Wish I could show off my work on MAN heat exchangers..
One of my most favorite power options to work on. DDC/MTU had some teething issues at the beginning of its intro into the boating world. After these lil issues, the 60 Series is as bomb proof as they are in the Large Cars.
