My wife and I are looking at a 1989 55' Californian cpmy and a 2006 Jefferson pilothouse. Can you tell me if either of these boats used balsa wood as a core material and where? If not, do you know who could? Could you also voice your opinion on these boats? We will be cruising in the northeast with the likelihood of going south to Florida. Thanks.

How bout looking at anything else.
I don't mean to be negative here or a smart A.
Just there are many better brands to look at in this range that will hold up better in lake chop.
I fear you looking at things that look just look good.

Cap Ralph, thank you for your thoughts. What would you suggest we look at?

    MYs; Hatteras, Alexanders, Viking
Sport cruiser, Viking, Viking Princess, Ocean, Tiara
To start, IMO; these are the brands that seem over built in the Cruiser/MY lines.
They do tend to look more boxy and dated on the outsides, but your on the insides.

If your going to start pouring money into a hole in the ocean, May as well make it a safe & solid ride.

And many others. I'm sure other YF members will chime in.

I forgot to welcome you to Yacht Forums.
Most of the kids here know me and understand My manners are lacking at times.
We are all here to help, from all over the world.

My wife and I lived on our Bertram MY for 17+ years. Still cruising
I feel that I understand built like a tank AND still pouring money into the water.

Figure out this Search thingie on the page top. Your queries have been asked before.
Your opening line was for 2 different boat types.

You kids may just want to figure out your wants, desires & needs before looking at models & mfg's.
