Anyone ever replace the salon air handler unit in the ceiling in an older Viking?

1989 45' convertible. 1 side of the salon air handler in ceiling has finally decided to die. The unit/compressor is still cooling great, only one squirrel cage fan stop working.

Been exploring removing and mounting a self contained unit somewhere or do you take the air handler out, disassemble and try and replace that fan motor?

If it’s over 10 years old, replace it. Air handler should be in flybridge brow and accessed from bridge. Split units have a longer lifespan.

Mine is under helm, will need to replace air handler and compressor as its r-22 and the don't make units any more compatible.

Its also a complicated custom ducting job under them to get to return/supply in the salon ceiling.

    Trying to keep it simple.

You should be able to replace the blower only. Is the AH original or has it been replaced already? The old cruisair stuff was really good and much better quality than today’s trash.

Over the years I have had a number of blowers replaced.

switching to a self contained isn’t going to be easy as you will need to run water lines all the way to the flybridge. That’s a lot of head for the pump. Plus the compressor noise.

Those fans are available at Grainger.

AH is original, I can't even figure out how to open it. Any suggestions?

If I did self contained I would figure out how to mount in under settee or under bench seat in galley and duct. No way I would try and run water up to the bridge.

Looking at similar on my 44, stand alone under galley bench, duct up to the old TV box. One vent out the old VCR slot, one out the side to the galley.
Pump stays right where it is.
Just have to get over 3 dead vents in the headliner.

    I'm thinking the same.

I've heard the whole air handler needs to come our regardless of just replacing the fan motor.

I've looked at that as well. You can access the unit under the helm for service but it is a B..ch. Lots of hours to get it out. Couple of places in Florida will custom make a new AR, but again $$$.

    No not true.
Remove the grille mounted on the ceiling, you should have two . Intake and discharge side.
Remove the intake side and filter.
You should be able to get to the blower.
Granger will have them. Dayton blower . Info should be marked somewhere on the old blower to match it up.

Fraid not. The condenser is there. These work backwards to what your thinking. Intake is up the middle, through the condenser over the fan and back out the port or stbd side. The only way to access the motors is by taking the top cover off and that's under the helm. I know this because I've done it.

MBevins - How did you get the cover off? Did you remove all the perimeter screws around the bottom of the unit? I was thinking of cutting the metal top off with a dremel to get access to the motor?

Even if I was able to remove all those screws of the metal case it would not come off due to clearance, refrigerant lines would need to be disconnected and I'm sure a lot of other obstacles.......

I've got a 1990 45 Viking C. Along with my mechanic friend who did most of the work, we just ripped out both compressors in my ER, all the A/H's and line sets, and replaced everything with 2 self-contained units -- 1 under the master birth and 1 under the helm on the FB where the double A/H was. He also had to run some new ductwork. It was a pretty major job, including running all the new water lines and using an angle grinder to remove the double A/H from under the bridge, but the new units work great and my ORIGINAL pump feeds both units easily even with the lift (head) to the bridge. My other option was to replace both compressors but I didn't want to take the risks associated with the 30+ year old A/H's, line sets, fittings/connections and R22. I'm glad I did the conversion--newer and simpler setup and technology, greater efficiencies, extra room in the ER...etc. If you decide to go this route you should contact me - riderross@yahoo.com

I m not a fan of self contained but if anybody is considering this, Defender has 20kBTU webastos 50% off while supplies last. Deal of the year.
