Okay, I have a problem with my capitol gears drive unit, the clutch pack is shot and needs rebuild. Will operate in reverse fine but no forward movement and burnt oil smell and color. 1980 Hatteras 43 double cabin. Detroit 671's, Where can I have these trans rebuilt? Option 2 replace with ZF gears, I have found two units at a good price, Just would like to know if anybody has ever upgraded to these gears on this engine. The ZF's are brand New 2 to 1 drive.

I would reach out to Dave at ADR Power Systems. Best transmission guys I've ever come across. They rebuilt our 1978 Cat transmissions without a hitch.

ADR power has turned into a great resource for our customers in Florida. On TD & ZF's, they have been ready.
Never hit them up with a Capital issue but I can not imagine them not ready to help.
Travis at the Largo FL site dispatches service and delivered spares within just a couple of e-mails.

There have been other great Capitol shops mentioned before on YF. Do some searches and maybe find a closer shop.
Never a dull comment on any of these shops also.

It is important to remove the pump and shaft before you remove the gear.
The link above will help you with that.
Not a horrible job getting it out but two people are necessary and three people is even better.

    Thank K1W1 for the link.

I do not have the info here but there is a shop that is run by a Capitol Marine guy.
H has loads of time in the business of those gears.
I will FWD that to you when I return home.

    Following up with your O P, replacing with ZF clutches;

Very likely new flywheel or at least a new torsional damper / engine coupler will be required.
New rear mounting pads installed on the hull stringers / frames.
New clutch mounts to sit on these.
    New shaft coupler.
    Shaft length may need adjustment.
Shafts pulled and coupler fitted and faced.
Clutch controls , oil lines and oil cooler re-configured.

Humm, I do recommend fixing what you have, even if pulling for a rebuild is required.
Capitol clutches are no longer made but there continues to still be some shops out there supporting them.

Bcstexas, I sent you a PM.
Chris Jones Marine is the guy I was thinking of.
You would need to ship the gear (s).

    Mine are also HE 10200s
You can download a manual through the link I posted.

I think you need to do more work to upgrade to ZF's or anything else.
The down angle or shaft offset is not the same

Who is removing the gear, you or the yard ?

The only reason I mentioned the ZF's is that I have a friend with a pair that has never been installed (New) and will let them go for $5000 for the pair. I was just thinking about upgrading to the new style gears, but I think that would be a costly adventure even with a deal on the gears.

You have model numbers, serial numbers, ratios and a list of parts that come whit them. I dable in re-powers from time to time and always shopping.
Also, your buds zip code to guesstimate shipping.
