Prestige paint pinholes, warranty?

    We have a 2015 prestige 550 fly we just purchased and just had it painted, during the process they contacted us telling us that thousands of pin holes are showing up in the primer so they had to basically sand it down and fill in all the holes and do a lot of extra work. This to me screams an issue with craftsmanship - the marina attempted to see if the manufacturer would cover it but it doesn’t seem like they are. So I wanted to see if anyone else had any opinions on how to go about this with the manufacturer ... the boat shouldn’t have pin holes at this age in my opinion. It’s costing us an additional 7k in paint repairs. Any thoughts?

    Prestige did not extend their warranty until September 1, 2018. Prior to that it was two years.

    Also, specific to issues such as yours:

    These warranties are valid for new boats, starting on the date of handover, and subject to annual care and maintenance of the boat as well as appropriate hull protection conducted by an authorized Jeanneau or Prestige dealer. In order to be approved, each claim will be subject to review by a dealer and technical support services from the shipyard. More details about these warranties are available through our dealership network.

    I can imagine even with the 5 year warranty they might fight the claim, but for your boat, it looks like it just isn't covered.

    The pinholes are there from manufacturing, not a new thing? I would bet they were there. How did the estimate to paint not account for this before starting the job? Just curious, and as one with experience at finding hidden gems from the manufacturers whilst at a boat yard, welcome to the club. It does require a good relationship with your shipwrights and technicians at said yard.
    I have no doubt your yard is correct and the work needs to be done correctly.
    $7K to sand our paint pinholes on a 550fly seems like a 40-50 hour labor job. Keep in mind this is skilled labor, it's not just some orbital sander and a face mask.
    Sorry you are dealing with this for sure.
    You are out of warranty. If you were in warranty it would be a task to get it covered, seems like an easy warranty call but they have to agree with the diagnosis and treatment plan, that is not as easy to do.

    Curious. Were you led by the broker to believe it was still in warranty?

    5 to 6 year old boat... not surprised it a not covered by warranty. Why did it need to get painted in the first place.

    Obviously you're stuck on the warranty. Sorry. Are the pinholes in the primer or in the hull? If in the hull I wonder if maybe a case could be made for fraud since it would have been known and then covered up.

    I am far from a paint expert but have painted miscellaneous things. Pinholes in the applied primer/paint can be indicative of a contaminated surface or poor environmental conditions for application (humidity, temperature, etc). Based on the very limited info I have I am thinking the yard messed up. Maybe an expert will chime in.

    THIS, it's contaminents on the gelcoat OR the air supply for the spray gun. Generally they are caused by oil or silicone and called fish eyes......

    Or IN the gelcoat which could leave someone else paying for it. I'd sand down one section layer by layer till I knew.
