What a day, three 60 foot boats, that is a lot to take in.
As to gelcoat crazing, spinderwebbing and cracking. That is not always a maintenance issue in my experience. There are some mold lay up practices and techniques that are at work as well. Gelcoat thickness comes to mind.

Thanks--I figure from talking to people and reading that it's not a quality issue, but I also don't want to spend this kind of money on a boat and then have to endure looking at that all the time. I wouldn't buy any of those without repainting and will factor that into the value of the deal.

Any idea whether Hampton, Offshore, Navigator or Neptunus ever had this issue?

Not to mention water intrusion, boat flexing in a sea way, boat flexing with haul out straps and poor maintenance to be sure.
Having a professional grind, prep and spray gel is an art and in labor intensive. Lots of BOAT dollars to do it correctly. Well worth it, I think.

I can only talk to Navigator. No more, no less than other boats in my marina. I do find that Nordhaven seems to have less gel issues, I have seen two, small sample, Selenes with all sorts of gel issues from cracks to orange peeling. Navigators owner's that I talk to don't seem to bring up gel coat issues as a rule. I did have a pro do a dozen cracks several years ago and all is well. I have the boat waxed twice a year and the cracks were there from previous owner.

    Good info, thank you.
Kind of disappointed about the OAs that I saw, but I guess it's just a question of factoring the repair into the price.

What boat was that? That s a ton of fuel for a 64 footer. The Lazzara 84 I run with C32 burns 75 gph at 20kts...

The 3412E is one one the best engine you can get. Very economical maintenance... oil changes, an impeller every 500-1000 hour... a raw water descale every 3 or 4 years. I ran a pair up to 5400 hours and they passed survey and analysis with flying colors

They were in a johnson 70 skylounge and we ran at hull speed probably 70% of the time on 18 GPH combined. I wouldn’t run them (or any diesel) at idle for a long time. The C32s in the 84 I run burn about 21 GPH combined at 1000 RPM and 10.5 hull speed.

Lazzara is a special breed when it comes to fuel economy in Motoryachts.........Hatteras 64' Motoryacht with 1800hp c32's burns 100 gph at 20 knots and 1650 rpms, 80% load was 28 knots at 145 gph I think it was........They built 1 Hatteras with 12v2000's and it actually was a good fit......80% load was 26.5 knots and 112 gph.........

Even the Taiwanese johnson 70, hardly a performance boat... woudl burn 80 GPH at 20 kts with the 3412Es at 55%

but... the Hatt will keep going after I turn around in the Lazzara :)

Curious whether with these big engines you get any fuel benefit slowing down to say 14-15 nmph?

On my boat now (twin Cummins QSC 540) the milage is about the same anywhere between 11-22 nmph.

Either run hull speed and below (10 knots or less) and you get great mileage or run on plane. 20 knots or better..........14-15 knots is a horrible speed for most any size planing yacht

14-15 mph is just about the worst speed to run at. You re probably burning as much fuel as you would at 20 kts

same mpg between 19 kts and 20kts? No way. What kind of boat? Do you have flow meters?

OK thanks--kind of what I figured
Did you mean to say 19 and 20? Not sure where that came from.

OK--yes I get around .6-.7 nmpg in that range. I have the Diesel Views. It's a 43 Mi kelson.

Another question: Seems like a lot of boats in the range I'm looking at (54-63) don't have inverters. Is that common? Some have an "ISO boost" and I'm not exactly sure what it does but it sounds like it affects shore power and isn't the same as an inverter.

Also, in terms of quality, would you rate Neptunus higher or lower than Hampton in the 2006-2009 range? And where would OA and Offshore fit in those rankings. And if it's not too much trouble, why?

First of all, on a 43 footer your hull speed is going to be about 8.5 kts. At that speed you should be getting well over 1 NMPG.

look at your fuel flow at just 10 kts. I bet it is twice your flow at hull speed. Once you hit hull speed fuel burn increases much faster than speed until the boat is fully on plane. The speed at which the boat gets on plane varies from Boat to boat but usually around 15 to 16 kts My old 53 Hatteras repowered with cummins and with larger trim tabs gets on plane around 15.5/16kts.

so, in your case at say... 13 kts... where the boat is unlikely to be on plane you really burning as much fuel as you would at 16 but going 25% slower. Your nmpg can not be the same

Per my fuel gauges at 8-9 knots I'm getting right around 1 nmpg. Slow down to idle speed (around 5 knots) and I'm getting 2 or better.

But I think we're getting a little off track. My original question was whether you get any benefit slowing down to 13-14. Sounds like the answer is a resounding no.

Was just trying to see how fast I can go while preserving fuel for long trips on the Hatt with the 3412e. Sounds like I'd need to do around 9 knots, but would need to bump it to cruising speed every 6 hours since otherwise it's bad for the engines. Is that right?

Modern engines like the 3412Es don’t suffer from
    Over-fueling like older mechanical engines.

when I used to run the 70 footer with 3412Es up or down the ICW sometimes I d do a few days at 1000 rpm before getting a chance to spool them up. No issues. Under hull speed and 1000rpm and they will run too cold so yes run them up every few hours

13-14 knots is a horrible speed......if anything, run at 1000 rpms or slightly less at hull speed for a few hours or many and cruise the rest of the time.

I'd put Neptunus just above Hampton, OA and Offshore somewhere around there, but it just depends......I don't like Offshores hull designs at all, full of quarky handling issues in various sizes.
