Long, long ago, I was a guest in that house rite on that inlet for a couple of years. Used the owners RIB to drag these similarly challenged people in then. Sometimes I wonder if I have seen it all... Naw, I have seen enough but far from it all. There are just to many ways SPS occurs.
IDIOT!!! It wasn't even rough. Could he have possibly done it more wrong? That's a guy you don't want to get into even a golf cart with.
It was reported on another forum that the Boynton inlet operator saw surfers ahead of him, and he was concerned he would hit a surfer if he continued through the oncoming wave. He says he elected to attempt a quick turn vs risk hitting a surfer. You can see the surfers ahead at the start of the video. His story is plausible. Assuming his account is correct, he had to make a split second decision between two risk laden options.
And where were they his whole way out. He came out in the wrong place, the wrong way and oblivious of both where the breakers and the surfers were. All he thought about was how cool his friends will think he is when he crashes through the breakers. He got himself swamped, then panicked when he saw the next wave. Tell me that boat can't get around some surfers once he's in the good water (or better still come out through the flat water a few feet to the south)? They were a convenient excuse for a guy who just can't admit he's an idiot and shouldn't be running anything more complex than a golf cart.
