I new about the ground lines, but always wondered how they don't get snagged in the props as the boats back in. Knew there had to be a system, but the chase line left tied to the pier never occurred to me. I feel like a dummy, but one that just got more educated. Thanks.

Like Pascal I too wondered about staying dockside with 15 kt. winds. Around here if I only went out when winds were less than 15 kts I'd have rarely left the dock. Grant you that 20/25kts gets a bit snotty, but that's boating (and what I ran is a lot more affected than a 180'er). I'd think it would mean a day of cruising rather than anchoring and putting the toys out, but I can't see staying dockside just cause of a little wind.

Could also be an insurance issue.... (talking production insurance, not simply yacht insurance).

I just watched last week's episode yesterday.

Anyone here have thoughts on what went down? Seems like there are a lot of uneducated opinions flying around.

Now for those who don't know, the Chief Stew had a package of Valium and a vape pen with CBD in her cabin. She did not report the Valium or show a prescription and it was not kept in the ships medical stores as required. She also couldn't produce the prescription at the time. To me it looked like a sample pack and doctor might have given her. She has previously suffered from anxiety and panic attacks and an anxiety attack was why she had it out and visible. Don't know if she took any or not. The CBD would be legal in every state and is legal by federal law if under 0.3 percent THC. One issue states have encountered is outside a lab an inability to measure. Now, I don't know what the maritime regulations would be on it or CG, but sure wouldn't take the chance.

I did some investigation into the behind the scenes. Hannah was caught as the result of a routine cabin check which is normal on that yacht. Both the Bosun and the Chief Stew conduct them on that yacht. The Bosum, Malia, was the one who found the valium. It was then called to Sandy's attention. Now, on that boat, having nothing to do with the show, there is very heavy surveillance with cameras and recorders. Once Sandy was told in the Pilothouse, there were a recorded record of the conversation. No possible sweeping under the rug or protecting the show. The reasons given for all the recording are insurance and accident investigation. Show producers not even involved. They were as surprised as anyone. The maritime regulations and job of captaining a ship quickly took over from the show. You even saw a second officer present for the termination and to do the write up, one otherwise not see on the show.

I'm sure there are likely stories that the bosun or second stew or some combination were behind it and conspired due to issues the bosun and Hannah had, but there is zero indication of that and every indication is that Malia found it in the normal course of doing her job, doing an assigned responsibility. Hannah was very careless in addition to the violation.

Hannah admitted it was hers, claimed not to have taken any valium on the boat.

Sandy fired her, she left to join her boyfriend in Australia, and she is now pregnant. Hannah considers her yachting career to be over and it was probably time for it for many reasons.

Forget all the on board drama and everything else, this was simply the removal of a crew member for violation of maritime law. Professionally done and written up. Hannah may be lucky they didn't call local authorities and turn her over to them. Hannah whined about it but not a leg to stand on.

Actually Malia was Hannah's bunk mate and saw the drugs in that capacity not due to a cabin check. Personally my reaction as bunk mate not captain would have been 'Hannah that has to go now. IMMEDIATELY or I must report it to the captain'. Then witness it being destroyed. Instead she took a pic for later extortion or vengeance. Malia is a weasel. I'd never trust her. Note she didn't report it when she saw it or even later until her BF came aboard and she and Hannah had a falling out over sleeping arrangements. If I were Hannah I'd take her off the boat and to a back ally. The captain did exactly what she had to do once notified. I think it was obvious that Hannah burned out and was done in yachting for the past couple of years. , but when you built a career it's difficult to walk away.
Since that boat is in Europe and I believe crosses borders Hannah would do well to watch an old movie called I believe Midnight Express.

For once I actually totally agree with NYCAP. Malia took that picture on a previous occasion and then the picture was brought to Sandy as revenge. I also wouldn't trust Malia and believe's she steps on people's backs to get ahead. She deserves the cry baby insecure BF that she has.

Regardless of how, if Malia knows about drugs on board, she has an obligation to report them to the Captain. No debating, no I'll let you get rid of them. Them being in a cabin they share only puts Malia at greater risk if she doesn't report them to Sandy. Any crew member I had who knew of such and didn't report it would be in trouble themselves as well.

Hannah, and only Hannah, is responsible for her actions and she's been around long enough to know that what she did was against all the rules. Sandy was actually very lenient by allowing her to leave as she did and not turning her over to local authorities.

I do not agree with some of the rules, but they are what they are and all she had to do on the Valium was turn it in and a prescription over to the Medical Officer in Charge for the boat. However, there is no way with all the surveillance on board that Malia could have just allowed her to dispose of it.

Would local authorities have actually cared about maritime law and technicalities of where the boat was flagged (Malta)? Hannah had a prescription, and CBD is legal in Spain.

Edit- Link to the prescription sticker on the other side of the box: https://twitter.com/hannahferrier_/status/1293003499899195393?s=19

But she didn't, and wouldn't have except for their argument. She went through 2 charters and the period between after seeing the drugs and said nothing. Weasel.
Of course Hannah was wrong and had to know it. There's no cleaning that up.
I've never been aboard a boat with a "Medical Officer in Charge" except on a cruise ship, and I've never had a captain or owner ask or make a statement about medications, and I've never turned over or been asked to turn over my medications to anyone. I did always (since cell phones) take pics of my pills and their bottles and prescriptions where applicable so law enforcement wouldn't have questions. Everybody knows or should know that illegal drugs are a strict no, but other than that the only issue is when it becomes an issue. I think theory is mixing with reality here. I can also say that if I ever found anyone searching my belongings on a boat I'd assume they were stealing and there'd be a big problem.

Then Malia should have been fired also because she did not report the drugs immediately. She waited a few weeks to report them.

Yep. She didn't report them for any reason except to hurt a woman she was mad at. Nothing to do with the safety or security of the vessel. I'd fire her simply cause I won't deal with back stabbing slime like her.

I guess the stews are not drug tested? As aviators we were told that the FAA does NOT condone the use of CBD and warned it may very well trip up a drug test and would NOT be a valid excuse.

Got to be scripted, nobody can be that stupid...Or?
I have been sailing for decades, if somebody bring drugs onboard, I could lose my boat: Been telling crew and pax that booze is okay, no restrictions except duty at the other end, drugs are bad and won’t happen on my watch.
WTF is wrong with people? :(

Supposedly... quality CBD oil doesn’t contain THC. US made CBD is supposed to be safe but you don’t always know for sure where it comes from. I ve told it s great for joint pains and a few other ailments but I m not willing to risk my license...
