    Been watching this thing for a couple of days now. I followed the feed from the Air Force recon this afternoon and they haven’t found a closed circulation yet but likely to happen in the next 12 to 18 hours.

    Cape Verde season is here.

    Insurance companies are crooks. Chubb decided that we (clients closing Friday) have zero coverage if the loss (any) is caused by wind south of the FL line.

    For those who want to know a little more about tropical systems beyond the hysterical cone of death... this site is very good. With active system he puts out a very thorough no nonsense no gimmick everyday discussing various scenario. Solid stuff and he s not selling t-shirts and caps. Yeah I know... it’s a FB link.     If that's the policy the client bought, then how are they crooks? Sure have a lot of people casually throwing that word around. Many policies are written that way.

    We never received a policy just a quote and overview of coverage. Now days before binding they want this no coverage addendum signed.
    In the last 5 years +/- most companies went to no coverage for wind damage if you do not move your boat from the path of a named storm... now its just no coverage from wind.
    The rates keep going up and the coverage keeps going down. That is crooked in my book.

    Problem is that honest and caring boaters are paying for the reckless owners who decide to sell their boats to their insurance company by not taking any precaution.

    back for Irma 3 years ago I made the call to run East to Hatchet Bay, Eleuthera. I know at least 4 boats (70+ with the speed and range) which sat in exposed slips on Miami’s coconut grove and were sunk. No excuse. Another one on my dock Had minor damage, easily fixed (maybe $30k) but the owner did nothing to limit damage after the storm and was able to get a full payment. Of yeah ... the boat was for sale


    And the other part of the scam is how premiums vary from 0.5% to 5% of hull value. We just renewed the policy on the 84 Lazzara I run... no significant change in 4 years with a 0.6% of hull value premium

    Meantime I m getting quotes of up to 5% of hull value for my own boat in which I have far more money than I am trying to insure it for.

    Watching the cone as well.
    Fortunately it is aiming straight for us in SE Florida: At 5 days out it will veer either left or right, never on track this far out..
    Going for a short 3 day/2 night cruise Thursday down the ICW, planning to be home 24 hours before this thing gets to us.
    (Also getting tired of ‘canes, been contemplating buying a house in Colorado or Maine for the summer, just to get away. )

    Isn't there a clause in the purchase contract, which allows for you to delay closing until there are no storms in the "box"?

    As of right Now PTC9 is not a named storm... it will likely change by tomorrow though. We just got our renewal a few days ago (effective August 1) and I was getting really worried because of PTC9...

    That's not crooked, just a buyer who didn't request all the details up front. Every insurer is different and policies are changing all the time. You assumed. Never buy insurance based on overviews. I have no problem getting insured including named storms and remaining in South Florida. I'd suggest a good broker who represents multiple lines and you know and trust.

    Is there a good app or email signup to get storm updates. I generally check the weather but forget to check in time to time, would be nice to have an app that could notify me.
    Although someone on here usually points out any Florida issues pretty quickly anyways.

    In hurricane season the first site I look at in the morning is the NHC. Yeah before yacht forums :)

    i use MyRadar for weather radar which has a tropical system overlay and alert.

    I don’t think it s loosing energy. If anything it looks healthier this mornjng. It s just not getting its act together very quickly but still expected to become a TS anytime. The good news is that it s still staying close to 15N so the outlook for SoFl is getting better with the NHC nudging the track W every 6 hours. They re also mentioning shear in addition to land interaction with Hispaniola and Cuba which will limit intensification.

    may not be good news for the gulf coast though.
