This is a picture of the port strut on a Viking 70. There is clearly some damage here but the strut also appears to be hollow. My diver was able to stick a finger up into the aperture. This would be a first in my 25 years experience as a dive service owner. Can anybody confirm or deny that a hollow strut is what I am looking at? Thanks.
Welcome to Yacht Forums fstbttms If this is a bronze strut, there was an air void in casting. Roto cast alloy strut. Galvanic erosion to the line cutter and/or shaft. Either way, it has to come out of the water for survey. I would recommend not running the boat till then.
Thanks! The boat is definitely coming out of the water but the owner was wondering if it would be safe to run the port engine.
Nobody here can answer that. IMO; NO. Of course the boat got to where he is now. Luck or luck? The owner could go up the coast after tuna or it could rip apart when the owner puts it in gear the next time. But nobody is going to say go for it. Call ToBoatUS for assistance pulling from the dock and entering the slip way for the haul.
If the color of that strut is not bottom paint, you have some serious galvanic corrossion issues going on.
