"one month after...."? Without getting into details, I'm pretty certain my mother passed from this virus back in mid December. I love New York, but I also recognize the narcissism that exudes as with every sunrise they see themselves as the epicenter of the epicenter of life itself. There is something rather unique happening in New York. New York is Italy. That does not inherently mean that every city is obligated to experience this issue in the same way, shape, and outcome as NY (or Italy). The science supports this perspective.

NYC got hit hard. The residents spread out to escape. Suffolk suffers from the same issues as the city, but then compounds as sick city dwellers head out island. South Florida got hit, too. Many cases originated in Europe, came to NY, and then fled to snow bird residences, etc. But as we stew through this, virtually every calculator is dramatically lowering their projected life loss. And as that happens, and as social distancing slows the spread, medicine is catching up.

It's hard for me to understand these calculators when just yesterday was the deadliest day yet, they have no cure nor vaccine. To me that sounds like nothing more than wishful thinking. And I pray the rest of the nation doesn't get hit as bad as NY, but I remember just a few weeks ago a lot of people in Florida considered it a hoax and a NY problem, just another flu. And yep the summer people from the city brought it out east when they fled the city. First known cases here were in Southold. Now it's spreading like wildfire from the east and the west.
My sincere condolences on the loss of your mother.

Data and modeling. The smartest people on the planet are working on this.

The data coming in daily is already old. We have no experience with this to model from. It's like modeling airplanes before we knew how to fly. Lots of guesses and lots of crashes and it took hundreds of years to get from Devinci to the Wright brothers. Hopefully our smartest people are smarter and faster and not slowed by those with other agendas.

As usual, I am a much more optimistic person than you are! Welcome back, Ed.

Modeling is only as good as the data used. Dr’s Fauci and Birx have both said this. We will not know actual infection and death rates until we have widespread testing. Also remember what Dr Birx said that if a patient tests positive for Covid 19 their death is considered in Covid rate without regard to actual cause of death. This has potential to skew the death rate higher. Lots of unknowns yet unanswered.

you mean like USA Today saying the flu was worst

    https://www.google.com/amp/s/amp.usatoday.com/amp/4632508002

or are you talking about the Washington Post?

    https://www.google.com/amp/s/www.washingtonpost.com/health/time-for-a-reality-check-america-the-flu-is-a-much-bigger-threat-than-coronavirus-for-now/2020/01/31/46a15166-4444-11ea-b5fc-eefa848cde99_story.htm

I didn’t know either papers were based in Florida...

Same papers who claimed the ban on travel from China was racist... If Europe had done the same, the spread could have been contained or slowed. But, no... Italy for one allowed FLIGHTS FROM WUHAN TO MILAN to continue... a virus conveyor belt into the heart of Europe.

Being in NY, almost 70, with COPD and cancer that can't get treated while this is going on makes one less optimistic. Now I have no doubt we'll beat this thing, I'm just afraid that too many unnecessary deaths will happen in the mean time if we don't take this serious enough.

Thanks for the welcome Ken. Stay safe.

I dunno- seems like we (as in most of the world) are taking it pretty seriously.
I've been on weekly conference (Zoom) calls with maritime professionals across the Globe. We've been trying to work out how the yachting industry will be affected. Some are optimistic and some not so much.

I DK about travel bans being racist. I saw it as economic. Too bad we didn't ban travel from Europe at the same time since that's where they say we got it from. We've all been playing catch up since December and I think mainly cause we were afraid of losing money. Hard to spend from the grave.

It was just two weeks ago right here where they were talking about sand bar parties, raft ups and Spring break beach parties. Many haven't been taking it seriously. They considered it a problem for the old to deal with or NY'ers or Europeans. Now I'm reading about babies dying and 20 somethings deathly ill and losing their cars and apartments cause they have no income. Like my area getting attacked from the east and the west when we considered it a NYC problem I fear the yachting industry is going to get hit from directions it doesn't currently imagine. Old people won't be going out, much less to their boats. Middle aged families won't be buying or using their boats when they have to bail out their kids who can't pay their rent, student loans and car payments.

My personal opinion is that the large yacht sector will bounce back pretty quickly. Some boats may change hands, but I think yachts will be perceived as a great place to get away from this whole mess. Small and medium size yachts may stay docked, lightly manned, and possibly for sale. This too shall pass.

I have resorted to ordering meal kits from Hello Fresh and Marley spoon. Each week I order 3-6 meals (2 servings), the food tastes great, arrives on my door step with all of the ingredients (except oil/butter/salt/pepper) and I don't have to go to the grocery store.

Here, some waterfront restaurants do have take out for boaters to pull up. It's kind of confusing, boat ramps closed, decent amount of boats on the water, a few fueling recreational boats, most are not...….

I think even the large yachting summer season is going to be hit hard. One thing is the economic loss......some owners facing that more than others. The other big issue is owners piecing their businesses back together after laying off employees and shuttering the doors for a month or two months. I'd imagine that's going to take a lot of time to rebuild businesses once things normalize. I fear that if we get a hurricane this year in Florida, it will REALLY be the nail in the coffer for the marine industry.

    FWIW, Westec Chicago Harbors status.

    2020 CHICAGO BOATING SEASON:

    • Chicago Boating Season:While the harbors are closed through April 30th, we are still planning to open on schedule, May 1st, thanks to the mild winter and the hard work of our maintenance crews. While this date is what we are targeting, we of course realize that the evolving public health situation may require us to delay the start of the season past May 1st. We have requested a policy decision from the Chicago Park District regarding financial consideration for customers for days lost if the season is delayed and expect a decision next week.
    • Extended Boating Season: We have received permission from the Chicago Park District to extend the 2020 Chicago Harbors season to November 15th for all customers. Previously only “late leaver” permit holders at Burnham Harbor could stay through that date.
    APRIL 15th PAYMENT EXTENSION:

    • Payment Due Date: In an effort to accommodate our customers during the COVID-19 pandemic, the April 15th due date for final payments for the 2020 season has been extended to May 15th. However, please note that if you plan to bring your boat in prior to May 15 th, payment is due in full before your boat is brought into the harbor.

We’ve been using Hello Fresh for quite sometime. Just got an email from them saying that they have had to make some adjustments due to current operating conditions. Instead of our usual 4 meal order, we have been cut back to 2 meals. More shopping trips ahead.

Try Marley Spoon......they have some great menu choices as well. I am a relatively new customer of Hello Fresh and have been getting 3 meals, then this week I ordered 5 that arrived yesterday, next week and the week after: I have on order 3 Hello Fresh/3 Marley Spoon for each week.

I haven't gotten any email from Hello Fresh limiting how many meals...…..(yet)…….

Sorry if this is off topic.

And we wait to receive a similar letter again talking about a later opening. I think May 1 wouldn't hurt them that much. June 1, I don't know. July 1 would be very harmful. We're anticipating a July 15 or even August 1 reopening of business, although hoping sooner will be possible due to a decline of Covid 19.
