I thought I should start a new thread on this awesome rub rail of mine!
42' Sunliner rub rail from factory came with a 1-1/4'' thin walled ''Cap'' fastened directly over the molded in shoe box hull to deck joint. Which is barley that. Hull to deck joint just kind off meet together and do not over lap. The factory bedded the joint and rail with sealant, no rubber or plastic base what so ever. So the bump / shock resistance was minimal being directly mounted to the hull.

From my observations, Ocean has had various incarnations of how to tackle the hull/joint rub rail section. Mine being the worst.

Over the years from previous owners ( never me!), various dings and impacts , have loosened up sections of the rail and screws to let water get behind and into the deck joint and cause leaks and trouble ...etc. Causing the screws to come loose and let water get in and cause the rail to get loose. This is also compounded by others over tightening / over sizing screws to the point the hold nothing....

So I'm removing the entire rail, cleaning out the joint/base the best I can . I plan to fill in the screw holes with a combo of epoxy on the large ones, and 5200 on the small ones. I plan to start a new hole pattern with the new rub rail. So I just want to seal them up to keep water out, not to hold a screw. Then I plan you use 5200 applied with a ''bazooka'' caulk gun, LOL, into the joint , then smooth it over and press it in with a putty knife/finger making sure there are no open gaps.

The new rub rail I'm getting is TACO V11-9798 1-5/8'' x 5/8'' flexible rub rail to which a 3/4'' hollow back stainless steel insert rests over the flexible rubber rail. This flexible base is the part that was missing in the first place.

I am going to post a few photos of the project from my phone, I hope they work and are not to big. Please let me know if they are and I will remove them/stop.

9CC6F72F-82F3-4C9C-96AB-75F172F76B71.jpeg Ok got all 94 ft of joint cleaned out..
I remove the little remaining bits of old sealant with a wire wheel on my cordless drill.
Also at the same time the wire wheel scuffs the joint for the new 5200 to bond to.

    E2949450-6B38-462F-BDF7-4099ADAD29E9.jpeg Don’t bogart that joint !
Got all 94’ sealed up with mostly five thousand two hundred :) and some left over day old Sikaflex 295 UV.
Also used West System six Ten over all the screw holes and digs in the glass rail . Goes on clear it’s over the scuffs in the photo. Had to fill in some big gaps with epoxy, had no choice.
It's got a day of drying time on it already in the photo.
Going to paint the glass rail on the underside to the turn of the hull only and the deck side up to the toe rail with Interlux Perfection Oyster white.

Very nice that's what it's all about ! What broke ? Hopefully not much, and just simple stuff. You put enough time and money into those motors I hope they are running well for you.

Wow! really nice! You really lucked out. Of course I'm jealous!! I'm sure I speak for others here too.

I was in Naples this winter with GF helping her parents for a few days. I rented an Everglades skiff I believe, buzzed around Naples harbor then out the inlet there and ran down to Marco Island back in and up the inside route. I forget all the names of the bays etc.. Anyway, we had a nice calm sunny day also. I was never on the Gulf before. Very nice and calm. Not sure if you got there on your trip.

Thanks...It's incredible the amount of time it takes! I've been doing the boat DIY stuff along time and it always takes more time and effort than you think. Even with my work slow down, I've got the time, it's still taking many, many days in a row to get this done on my own of course.

Next step is the new rubber base rail and S/S rub rail installation. Finally, point I've been working to get to.
