Some sad news about the 90-meter Classic/traditional styled and designed "Nero". Apparently I'm seeing photos of this yacht listing heavily to port in a drydock it seems? Information is a little sketchy at present. Will keep you updated. Photo By Jimevans2010

Yep, the yacht was apparently at Amico getting some work done and in the process of relaunching when some support panel or block gave away causing the vessel to loose stability on the blocks. That seems to be the word floating around, no pun intended.

There were injuries involved aboard, reading that four went to the hospital.

The relaunching, or undocking as it's called in the big ship world is where 85% of related accidents occur. It usually involves fuel, ballast or other weight transfers that either nobody told the Dockmaster or they didn't take into account for. As soon as the vessel starts to reach float off it rolls due to negative GM.

The yard said the yacht listed during what they term as the "pumping out phase of dry docking" as the yacht was being relaunched. Amico & Co said this was "for reasons that are yet to be ascertained." They are also saying the yacht didn't make contact with the side walls of the drydock. "Nero" is in stable condition and any damages are being accessed.

So the pumping out phase would be the initial docking portion then. This is a graving dock so you pump it out to dock the vessel.

Nero was inspired by J.P Morgan's Corsair IV and built as a replica, but with modern technology. Here she is in better days...

I've been in the old Royal Naval dry-docks in Malta a few times. It feels really wobbly as the water rushed in and the wooden prop poles start to fall away from the hull just as a little flotation occurs.

Not a nice feeling at all.

Thanks, Fish, you painted a picture with that post, and in so few words.

I came across this interesting tidbit when researching Corsair IV in the New York Social Diary.

"The Morgan Corsair created major media attention for the times resulting in a legendary quote by the senior Morgan when he was asked how much it cost to operate a boat that size. His quick response: “Sir, if you have to ask that question, you can’t afford it.”

I have always been curious as to the origin of the phrase.
