2019 Storm Season; Hurricane Dorian

It's tough to say at this point, but currently not much will be left. Many of the marina's in the abacos, the docks were a bit dated to begin with and I would guess most would be destroyed or unusable. The Abacos also relied on several ferry services to get from the main islands such as Treasure Cay to the outer islands. I would venture that most of those boats have been destroyed. Now, the Bahamians are quite resilient at rebuilding quickly from what I've seen.

We were cruising the Abacos in 2000, one year after a direct hit by Cat 5 Floyd and most marinas were back on line. The foliage had not recovered much, not many large trees left. Not comparing Floyd to Dorian but the but the Abacos were badly damaged and recovered quickly.

I see tourism in the Abacos as we've known it to be dead without some major new investment. In most cases, I doubt the current resources can rebuild from the major damage. Now, new investment has often been very slow to come and when it has come, more often than not has led to private islands and resorts rather than public.

It is like one monstrous tornado hit in terms of the level of destruction, but then that was the level of the winds. It would appear the Abacos got the maximum winds from the storm.

Similar wreckage as the Florida panhandle last year after Cat 5 Michael blasted through the Panama City/Mexico Bch area. Not much left undamaged after a Cat 5.

Is it possible to rebuild after such devastating damage? This is heartbreaking to look at.

Now several tornadoes have hit eastern Carolinas.
