After having the great experience of Scott Crosby working on and fixing my DD 671's I got tired of running to the fly bridge to start the engines. I watched his videos of bus repair and many of the buses had a remote start in the engine room. I would like to add that to my '83 46 Sunliner. I have done a little internet checking and must be using the wrong search terms because I cannot find what I am looking for. First would be a kit to add or retrofit a remote start button. The second is a schamatic and parts list. Third would be a schematic. Do any of you know of anything like this? Pam Buena Ventura 1983 Ocean Yachts 46 Sunliner.
I have a little momentary push button with alligator clips about 18 inches long. The button is like your stop button for your babies. I attach one clip to the hot battery wire on the starter and the other to the start solenoid. I use this when winterizing or general repairs. I've got temp and oil pressure gauges in the bilge also.
Covington 671s had them stock. Call Western Branch and ask for the schematic for the 671TIB with local start/stop bolted to the engine. It's a real simple ad on that is in parallel to your key switch up stairs. On-Off, (on)-off-(on) switches, in line fuse holder, a mounting panel, wire, crimps and looms are needed for a permanent panel. Or, Jump the starter to start and pull the governor closed to stop. Detroits don't need any juice to run but your alternator and gauges will not be enabled this way. If nothing come together, let me know and I can draw something up. But it's going to take a tech to put it together. You up to it?
If you install permanent start service in your engine room, use a momentary key switch on each engine, not a push button. Also be sure you have a safety on your gears to prohibit starting in gear! Otherwise, just use the temp pushbutton setup, but still use safeties on your gears...
Thank you both, I will look at the many auto stores where I live...four with in one mile from each other !
Snap on sells a remote push button starter (non permanent) that you simply clip the two alligator clips onto the starter solenoid leads. It's easy and can move it from motor to motor. All you need to do it yourself is a momentary switch and wiring and a few connectors and a place to mount the switch.
I've been doing that since the early 60's. For this boat I want to add in permanent start switches in the engine room, I figure if a bus can have them so can I.
Okay. I have to finally admit why having start boxes over the engines would be so cool. It would have sign with a red arrow pointing to the red button and a sign "DO NOT EVER PUSH THAT BUTTON". I would have guests onboard and proudly show off my engines and let the guests see the sign before I just say "I never pushed that button. Want to see what happens?".
