    Hi everyone just joined up. I am getting into the game with a budget, focused primarily on getting a 46 from the 80's in good overall condition. I'm a commercial tugboat captain and very skilled mechanically, but not much experience with fiberglass or Detroits. I've been sponging up as much information as I can here and other sources, and have looked at a few boats already. I really prefer the galley down, midship master layout, not sure how many were built since a lot of the market is master fwd.

    Love the classic look of Post, hope to join the ranks soon

    It may take a while to find the right boat but be patient my wife and I looked at 45 Vikings and 46 Posts for 2 years I finally talked her into the 46 Post I think only the later models have the stateroom to starboard. We ended up with the 88 46 post with 692 Detroit's paid a lot for it but it was basically redone except for exterior paint new interior, engines majored, new enclosure, new electronics we 10473.jpeg couldn't be happier good luck

    I agree with Rich, take your time. Be sure about your use of the boat. It will help with your selection and save time and bucks on making right for you. I bought my 91 46 in 2005. Set up for extended out island cruising, fishing , diving and exploring. Good luck, Post is the best for me.

    Thanks, I've seen the starboard midship master in boats as early as '79. The shared shower double head is an ingenious use of space I think. Anybody want to sell me one? :)

    We bought an '80 Post, galley down, side state room with two bunks.
    First winter I changed that to a side Queen.
    That is when I learned how hard it was to take the interior components apart.
    Whatever they used ( 5200 maybe? ) made it a struggle to remove.
    This made me feel the boat was pretty well built.

    Yeah from what I've seen these boats are really well put together, hence their reputation. Do you have details of the room conversion or pictures? What did you do with the head? I'm not really a fan of the forward master berth, would much rather prefer it be midships

    I did not touch either of the heads.
    It is just she and I so its Hers & His heads now.......
    No drawings either.
    I probably have pictures around here somewhere or I will take a few.

    I used the original center nightstand ( ? ) drawer size to start in the partition wall corner. built a new night stand to fit those drawers.

    Basically filled the remaining area with bed !

    I put the doors back into the base of the bed and split the base that the mattress sits on down the center so we can open it up for storage.

    It is not a walk around bed.
    It favors the Starboard hull side which sort of makes it a pain to make the bed but gives us maximum prone area.

    Re-used any rim I could and made some that looks pretty close to original where I had to.

    Ok doesn't seem like there would be enough room for a queen in there without moving some bulkheads around

    I use the term Queen very loosely, I suppose. Maybe a Double would be a better term ?

    FWIW - 77 inches long and 55 inches wide without removing the hanging locker forward of the bed.

    We had a custom matteress made for it also.

    Ok thanks. Did you move the bulkhead aft of the bed? Can that be done? Looks like dead space back there

    Did not move the bulkhead. On mine that is the partition wall btwn the stateroom and saloon ( upper ) and engine room ( lower area ) . The genny is right up against that bulkhead.

    I believe it to be structual from Port to Starboard across the beam of the boat.

    The work I did affected the interior of the stateroom only.

    Thanks for the info. Some boats have a washer/dryer behind that bulkhead but not much else. thinking I could cut it out to make room for a full size bunk

    BTW, I just took almost 30 years of bottom paint off a late 80's 46

    and not one single blister.

    I have an 84 46' and I just blasted my bottom last November and had the same result. the yard doing the job was amazed at the condition of the bottom being a 35 year old boat with no blisters or signs of osmosis

    FWIW:

    I've got an '80.
    It did have blisters prior to my purchase.
    ALL fittings were removed from the bottom, it was shaved and then built back up to the original thickness.
    It was finished with the state of the art ( at the time ) products 27 years ago.
    We have not had any returning blisters to this day.
    The contractor that did the work guaranteed the work for as long as the ( former) owner owned the boat.
    He did not pass that guarantee on to me.

    Still, it was a good job and he has done additional work for me with excellent results.

    Anybody know what years they had the gelcoat issues and the blistering?
