Quality Comparison for Ocean Alexander (OA), Hatteras & Westport

    I am relatively new to boating and in the market for a pre-owned (no older than 2015 and appropriate hours) 90 - 112 foot motor yacht. The 3 brands I am investigating are OA, Hatteras and Westport. Can you (more experienced Captains and Owners) provide some insights as to quality construction and workmanship of these brands and, if it were your choice, which brand would you choose.

    OA does not belong in the same category for quality. Stick with the other two.

    Both good boats. The Hat will have a solid glass hull versus the cored on the Westport. From a used perspective, there isn’t much inventory for the Hats and Westport in that age range whereas there are a couple more OAs. I agree that OA shouldn’t be considered as equivalent to the Hat and Westport.

    From a used market perspective, there are really only two options for you: there is a 2016 Westport 112 named Checked Out asking $12.95m and a 2016 Hatteras 100 named Lady Carmen asking $8.3m. Lady Carmen is more set up for charters, though, with an on deck master and 6 cabins in total whereas the Westport is configured to have just 4 cabins.

    Thanks and yes. I have looked (on line) at both Lady Carmen and Checked Out. It's hard not to like the Westport ! :). I saw a 2019 Westport 112' for sale with an asking price of $15 million so, it appeared to me that the asking price for Checked Out at $13 million was on the high side. I'm reasonably new to the yachting world but, from what I have been told these yachts depreciate about 15-20% in year 1 and, then, about 10% per year after that. If my math is close, and assuming (perhaps an incorrect assumption) that in 2016 Westport 112s were less new than the $15 million being asked today then Checked Out should have an asking price closer to $10 million. Am I missing something? The yacht has been on-the-market for about 8 months now and the price may be the issue. Your thoughts??

    You're possibly missing several things. First, many boats out there not seriously for sale, just if someone wanted it at this price. Some purchased, put into charter, and offered for sale, but not seriously.

    However, you're also missing how well Westport's have held price over the last few years. I think their value in charters is part of it. Also, the price increases the last couple of years.

    Then the market shortage. I've seen the time there would be 5 or 6 112's for sale.

    There's a 2012 130' listed at about 80% of what was paid new for it. We were offered a premium for ours the day we took delivery and others have been too. There's a 2017 125' at very close to what was paid for it. There's a 2008 130' offered at more than 50% of it's new price.

    Thank you so much for your input. Being relatively new to yachting, I have avoided looking at yachts older than 2015 feeling that they may have yesterday's technology or have already seen "their best days". Perhaps my ignorance about this segment, have me focused on newer is better.

    In the Sportfish market I follow you could go to 2012 and see almost same technology as 2015. Not a lot of marine innovation between 2012 and 2015 given the impact of the last recession. Perhaps the larger yacht market is different.

    Take a look at Nordlund Yachts out of Tacoma as well, my favorite in 100’ - 110’.

    The risk with them is that they are a smaller operation so some financial uncertainty risk.

    I think out of the boats you are looking at, the main differences that you will see is between the brand new models and any of the current used ones. On the Hatteras side, they updated the 100 to be a 105 with bigger windows, larger galley skylight, new bow seating area, and the Hatcon system. Westport also redesigned the 112 with larger windows access the board and an option for a fully integrated bridge system. From a livability perspective, I’d say that the added natural light would be a big contributing factor for improving the 112. On the Hatteras, it’s less noticeable as there is a less drastic change.

    I too wouldn't say that OA's quality is anywhere near Hatteras and Westport. Really while both have the same excellent quality, you cannot compare the Hatteras and Westport as 12' is a big jump in size. Basically it's going to come down to, do you want the size of the Hatteras or do you want the more accomodations of the 112'. You could go back much further in years and the technology is really close to the same as far back as 2006 almost. Minor changes but not incredible ones.

    Not certain how that applies to a pre-owned vessel, plenty of quality yards to support the product.

    Cool Shipyard. I've heard of it but did not know that Ed Monk & Tim Nolan where the lead architects/designers.
    55 year old family business sounds good to me too.
    I looked at the 2003 number on yachtworld just now and that is a nice design.

    Was implying a new build. There aren’t any pre 2015s on the market. I’ve been on a couple and I like the yachtfisher designs they do.

    There used to be a nice cluster of builders in that area, yacht builders like Jones-Goodell, Northcoast Yachts and the more commercial/naval Tacoma Boatbuilding. Lots of construction/boatbuilding talent is in that area.

    Oh please. I think the quality level of the newer OAs are going to be just fine.

    I would seriously take a look at the new 90r. This new model has been selling very well. I honestly think you are getting the space of a 112 in a 90' package that costs less - much less to dock, insure, maintain, flag, etc. Bigger isn't always better...but newer usually is.

    Did you go on the 90r? It didn’t seem to have the same solidness of the finishing as the Hats did. More what should be considered is the Horizon 85/87 and if more space is needed, the 102 FDH. I thought the Horizon was pretty solidly built and more customization than the OA.

    I think the biggest differences is the interior design. Westport and Hatteras seem to be aimed at older conservative American styled interiors. OA and Horizons have more European flair..( Still not at the level of Princess or SL) But a 5 staterooms and beach club on a 90' is pretty cool. The Horizon FD series is pretty great as well. They are making of for interior space with a massive beam..23'3" on an 85 is pretty wide....
