I have a Kohler gen set in my boat. The unit is very low hours (185). It has been quite awhile since I replaced the fuel filter and I have forgotten the sequence of buttons to push on the control panel to only activate the electric fuel pump to fill the new filter. When I move the rocker switch from AUTO to RUN, the electric fuel pump comes on for just a moment before the starter engages.

I know there is a way to just activate the fuel pump only but can't recall it. On the control panel by the electronic hour meter is a row of 3 buttons. The first one is a "o" like a typical on/off. The next two are
this symbol < (one pointing up and the other down). If anyone knows the sequence, I would appreciate the help.

It seemed like I had to press a couple of buttons simultaneously and move the rocker to run, but I just can't recall the exact procedure.

Can you double check that model number?
In the old days, we ran a B+ jumper from the battery or starter to the connect at the fuel pump.
On some when we could not reach anything, open the bleed screw on top of the injector pump and keep cycling the run switch till fuel comes out.
Check your manual for tips also.

In your future, you could pre-fill the filter with clean diesel.

Typo on the Model.........should be 10 EOZD. Yes it is diesel. The owners manual just references operating the fuel pump to purge air but does not give specific details. The last time I changed the filter, the tech where I purchased the filter told me how to activate the fuel pump only without engaging the starter. It's been a couple of years and I cant remember the procedure. Because of holiday season, gen service shop closed until Jan 2.

    Thanks for the input.

Are you sure there is not a mechanical lift pump?

Positive. It has a Carter electric 12v pump which supplies fuel to the injection pump.

I ran out of time today. When I go back to the boat, if I can't figure out the sequence, I'll fill the new filter with fresh fuel, loosen the bleed screw and then cycle the run switch a few times. There was a very easy way to activate the pump only, I just forgot how.

    Thanks again

Carter pumps would have a part number on them. Not much on the web.
I found one manual. it was a catch all for the panel and to large to up load.
    Try;
    http://www.kohlerpower.com/onlinecatalog/pdf/tp6694.pdf

Also, EOZD seems larger than a 10.

Without billable time, That's all I can do.

I checked the download. Different unit. I was hoping someone here had the same 10 eozd I have along with a better memory of how to activate the fuel pump.

    Thank you for your time.

    The procedure is:
1/ Press and hold select button on control (circle button not arrows)
2/ push switch to run while holding select
3/ continue holding select until fuel flashes on display screen

That was the first way I tried, but I probably didn't hold the select button long enough. Thank you!

    From an on-line manual?
I probably was asking Google the wrong search phrase but could not find much.
My 800gig raid is only 2/3 full of manuals (PDFs) and pictures I have collected thru the years.
Sure wish I had this one or any of the newer fancy Kohler manuals with this info in it.

The newer style Kohler controllers have a menu which you can turn the knob to scroll thru. They incorporate this ( fuel prime) within one of the menus. All you have to do is select the option and press the button

I always pre fill the filter on all my diesels filters and have no problems. I have a new Phasor with out all that push button stuff, I'm not able to let the fuel pump fill the filter. But I like it that way, keep it simple stupid which I'm fluent.

Where does the air go from the Kohler filter when you pump diesel into it? Do you leave the filter loose till it, both air then fuel, leaks out ; then snug it up?

There is a bleed screw just upstream from the filter that you open slightly. Just run the pump until clear fuel (no bubbles) comes out, turn off pump and tighten screw.

I would think the bleed screw would be downstream of the filter.

Correct. I was saying up because it is just above the filter. But you are right, it is between the filter and the injection pump.

Followed the above procedure and it worked perfectly. I had to hold the select button for about 10 seconds before the "fuel" message came up the the pump activated.
    Thanks again for the info.
