Hi everyone. My whole life I was dreaming about yacht sport but never considered I can start. I’ve just found a yacht school here in Russia, Novosibirsk and now a little bit anxious about things to start with. May be there’s any literature or advices or one can share stories how your yacht life began?
    Glad to be here

Thomas I would recommend caution with dealing with Russian “women” over the internet. What shows up on your boat might be significantly different from what’s in the picture. I had a desperate friend who had internet dealings with an attractive Russian women who ended up being a man.

And what would you advise Russian women asking for career advice who are then propositioned by persons who join a boating forum just to try to induce them to fly from Russia to Florida for free sailing lessons?

Seems to me a thread of one post wonders, neither of which I'd be too trusting of.

OB, I don’t know what you are inferring. Perhaps that I was predisposed to find the Russian poster fraudulent. I would say yes to that. Was that wrong or presumptuous? Maybe. I would also say that I found it extremely wierd that Thomas would want to offer anyone (male or female) a “job” on his boat over a post on the internet. As to what I would advise a Russian women asking for career advice. First and foremost I would advice any women to not post a picture of “themselves” so as not to encourage the very behavior that we may be seeing.

Once again I am not sure of your exact point but you have done a little presuming yourself. That Thomas is indeed propositioning her. Which I find to be a reasonable assumption. BTW I have 2 daughters, a wife, & a sister and am famailiar with some of the challenges of being a woman.

Once again, would be interested to know what you post is inferring and what if any problem you had with my post.

I agree with you both, life is full of gambles, minimizing the risk is the key feature that must surely lead us all if positive returns are realized. Buying my first sailboat was a risk I hated to take as the investment can most generally only pay off in lifestyle.. much like inviting any woman into your life, which has never paid off in my quest of positive lifestyle challenges.
I do love sailing and sailboats, the ocean and time I spend on it has been the greatest reward of any investment I have ever made, there is no feeling I have ever had that compares to a beam reach with the power of Gods grace allowing my boat to create lift that drives me forward,,, may we all have the lift that allows us to feel a positive investment in our lives and the lifestyle we have chosen...….

My reply was simply offering to teach another individual with no experience how to become a sailor. this lifestyle and ability is not something that can be truly enjoyed if taught by a drunken washed up marina queen.. I was lucky and hope others have the same ability to find someone who enjoys the life, the creatures of the sea and the ocean its self, learning to intertwine natures features of wind water and the magic of sailing along with the biology and respect for the environment is something that one must test in his students. as far as trying to capture the attention of a woman and romance her to a relationship from a internet offer is not my style. I would do that portion with true romance the moon the stars, red wine and the warm Caribbean sun.. trust me at my age romance is a lot of work and if I do a job it only will be done once and done with Bristol clarity along with the quality that makes any job worth doing..

I my self was a single father who raised a daughter alone, I too know the challenges women face in this world, I assure you my intentions are only to help others find the happiness that in my opinion can only be felt sailing upon the sea..

15 years of reading between the lines and I have no clue on the intentions of this thread but have come to trust OB's instincts.

My observation is based on it being Elena's only post and at the time it was ThomasGQ's only post. They both may be quite legitimate, but I'd advise both to be wary of the other. Not based on knowledge of either, but based on the lack of history and information. ThomasGQ may be the most thoughtful person ever but he only signed up and came on to make that post. He may make future contributions.

Were I to post to Elena something of the nature, come to Fort Lauderdale and I'll train you, I would advise her to treat it with suspicion.

Going the other way, how many females have we had post here with their photos and wanting advice on getting into the industry, then quickly disappearing? We don't know if anyone on here was ever taken advantage of as no one would admit if they were.

I don't see Elena flying to Miami to get trained by ThomasGQ, but I guess it's always possible. Neither Elena nor ThomasGQ know enough about the other at this point to trust them.

The way I understood it, she the Russian was asking for advice on learning how to sail or learn about sailing, my advice was to buy a boat and learn to sail, or I would teach her on my boat. there is no hidden meaning or intentions.... I enjoy seeing others learn as I was a teacher for many years and its a hard habit to break. this is the forum for those seeking to crew??? have I been mislead by the title? many boats take on crews via the net. I suppose there are many that use it as a way to seek marriage and all that nutty stuff as well, but that's a different forum and should not be tolerated if a add is placed seeking such stuff on a seeking crew forum.. that sort of thing should go under a seeking love or companion forum.
I had no idea that my reply to this person would be subject to such dastardly suspicions, Please do not think of me that way. I have been searching for a web site to gain knowledge and experience of other sailors and enjoy the experience. I had no clue I would be thought of as a pervert for inviting someone to learn how to sail.

Since she placed a photo in the Avatar, I suspected an outcome like this. But it could as well have been an answer to her questions, so I just waited to see what would happen...

Thank you I appreciate your integrity and understand how this reply being my first here could be "weird".

OB I am the first to understand that the written word does not communicate as well as the spoken word but I am still curious as to what your post to me was attempting to address. I answered your query as to what advice I would give a woman seeking career advice on the internet. The courtesy of answering my question would be appreciated.

You were warning about Russian women and I was warning about those offering crew jobs online. Nothing more, nothing less. I was simply saying neither should be blindly trusted. I wouldn't invite a Russian woman to come join me on my boat without knowing much more and I wouldn't get on a plane and fly across the world to crew for someone I knew nothing about.

Both those things happen all the time, although not always Russian. One simply must be careful.
