    Hello,

We are going to replace our old foam mattress.
    I need a basic square , almost queen size. 58x72 x 8-10" thick.
I don't want any type of Spring mattresss.
I have to move it on occasion to get to an access hatch. One piece is ok.

Looking at Handcraft and Portland mattresses now.
Getting a bit confused on the more we read.
We want latex , but what kind is really good ? Dunlop or tallalay methods ? Thinking we want medium firm...
We don't really have a show room near us to try them out, so I'm reaching out to see if anyone has purchased a mattress lately that could offer insight and opinions .

    Thanks ,
    Cort

I would recommend a quality memory foam mattress. Find a good custom mattress manufacturer in your area. The RV people can likely refer you to one. Doesn't need to be a brand name. We purchase ours from Select-a-Bed as we got started with them when we wanted a supersized (10' x 12') mattress for our bedroom and the quality has had us coming back for more.

Good luck. And before you make your purchase, lay down on it with the same foundation you'll have on board

We recently shopped on a new mattress, but haven't pulled that trigger yet.... .

One of (maybe all of) the brands they carried could be ordered with a hinge for easier access to storage underneath. I think "Handcraft System 5" was the one we short-listed, and we would go with a hinged version.

Instead of a hinge in the mattress, hinge the whole
Support board on the base with a couple of gas lifts. So much easier and better than a hinge mattress

I recently replaced the master mattress on my hatt after redoing the whole master. Forgot the brand, it s an off the shelf Queen with the topper. What a difference. Worth every penny.

Yeah I know as you get old mattresses matter :)

I'll let you all know what we get. It's gonna happen this winter for sure, she's not happy, I'm still fine with it but she's buying it:).... Mine is from 1981 with a 2'' topper that I put on a few years back to make it doable and to cover the old stains and skank that came with a leaky transom hatch , which I fixed. The hatch under the bed is a service hatch for the aft bilge pump and rudders/piston for the helm I only have to slide the mattress forward 2-3ft to open it, no hinge needed on mattress.

    I'm still wondering what's going on , on OB's boat with that 10' x 12' mattress!:D

Agree, that'd be niftier, sometimes... and the bedding/linens would raise nicely with the mattress.

In our situation, it would take a whole bunch of rough carpentry and then some finish joinery, though... outside my skill levels... and at the same time it'd make service access to our under-berth AC (another hatch, nearer the headboard) more difficult...

You would still retain all the access hatches in the surface that the mattress sits upon and the ability to lift that entire surface will make servicing any below berth AC units or other equipment even that much more accessible. The smart builders have done this for quite awhile now.

I would expect that.. mostly. In our case, the under-berth AC service access hatch is at the pointy end of the right triangle that would form, and too small for me to get in there without disconnecting that end of a hinged mattress support mechanism and moving it all out of place. Hmph!

If you want a latex mattress look at Sleep EZ. We have a select sleep 10" medium two layers of dunlop with tallalay top layer, very comfortable. They can help you decide on the firmness and you can also change the top layer later to a different firmness if wanted. Latex is heavy so Pascal's suggestion to hinge and have assist gas shocks would be needed.

Great, they are very helpful and good prices. They are top rated and you can save $$$ buying online vs in store. Also have been in business a long time.

I installed a Sleep Number Bed in my master stateroom (pumped air). It is easily transportable and very comfortable.
I've had it for 3 years without any issues.

We went with Sleepez , thanks Bayoubud! $1250 for a 58''x72'' custom mattress shipped to me in three boxes, one 3'' firm, one 3'' medium , 2'' soft all latex blended Talalay. It includes the cover which you lay the three layers in ,which naturally stick together then zip it up, not having them glued together gives you the option to move the various layers around to change it up if you want, more firm, etc.. . Includes two shredded latex pillows, and a protector cover.

Having it in three boxes should make it much easier to get onboard and down below into the boat. I'll have it next week.

Simple setup and easy to change the firmness if needed. We have had ours for several years and would not buy any other type. Have no connection other than a satisfied customer....no hype or false ads....they sell a quality bedding that is becoming increasingly popular....Enjoy!
