My husband and I relocated from Fort Lauderdale, after 20 years, to my home town of Norfolk, VA. I grew up on the water here on the Lafayette River where my family and buddies spent our summers water skiing, sailing, jumping yacht and tug boat wakes, and jetting up and down the waters of Tidewater! Norfolk has the largest naval base in the world and is known as "The World's Greatest Harbor"! Seriously, when I was growing up in the 50s and 60s the best radio station was WGH. Their moniker was of course, "The World's Greatest Harbor". Norfolk is another Venice of the Americas. Imagine my surprise when there was an inweater boat show happening here a two weeks after we arrived! I was there all day snapping photos to share with you all!

The first boat that really caught my eye was the Keiser 42. I have never heard of this brand before! I soon learned that their yacht was created "By joining forces with two world-leading companies, Vripack Architects for design & naval architecture and Bavaria Yachtbau for their unrivalled ultra-modern production facilities, we have been able to make our vision come true." I instinctively knew from the yacht's beautifully flowing lines and magnificent craftsmanship that she was born in Northern Europe.

Dare I say it, she reminds me of the Wajer line mentioned by ombreetsoleil :):) After checking her out you let us know what you think. Her price point was just South of $800k.

Oh, did I say the Batmobile was there? Yes, definitely the coolest and most unusual boat at the Show IMHO was the Heyday wakeboard boat that was specifically designed to throw the largest wake for wakeboarding yet, or so they say. Nevertheless the design is, to me, very reminiscent of the Batmobile!!! What do you think?

All boats make wake. Disco always has a variety of pictures from the boat shows he visits. He has single handedly (sp?) covered FLIBS for YF!

Not necessarily. It depends on the purpose of the design. This boat is specifically for wakeboarding which requires a large wake. It starts to throw a wake large enough for wakeboarding at around 15 mph. At lower speeds it will not throw a large wake. When I was on the Tidewaters of Virginia in the 60s my buddy and I used to wait for yachts or tug boats to pass so we could jump their huge wakes in his runabout with an eighteen horsepower engine! It had a large prow bow so we easily plowed through the wakes with the spray a flying! With safety always being paramount in any marine environment responsable operation of your watercraft if a must.

I was intrigued by this particular design because of its unique look and purpose.

In my mind's eye the water version of the Batmobile!

Hi Carl, It is great to be in an environment where it is relatively easy for me to once again enjoy the thrills of the marine environment! Since I live blocks from the waterfront of Norfolk I hope to be able to contribute interesting and hopefully unique content to yachtforums.

This is a view from Norfolk looking South where shipyards abound. The "paddle boat steamers" are the ferries from Norfolk to Portsmouth. To the right of the shot the waterway is the entrance portion of the Elizabeth River that becomes the Intracoastal Waterway off of which is the Dismal Swamp Canal that was constructed by George Washington to connect the major port of Norfolk to the Carolinas to ship farms goods such as tobacco, cotton, and other farm goods abroad.

The Portsmouth Naval Shipyard is also on the South branch of the Elizabeth River. Click on the image to see the South fork of the Elizabeth River with Portsmouth in the background.

More to follow!! So glad to be back on board!!!

Wake boats are quite advanced. Some are designed to sit lower in the water. Some have ballast to be added and subtracted. Some have devices to change the wake at the push of a button and some even have devices to move the wake side to side. When I was young, there were tournament ski boats but then wakeboarding hit and they weren't enough any longer.

The lake we were on was filled with wake boats.

Yes, I was stricken by the stern of the boat that had a prop drive with a rudder. The prow of the boat is reminiscent of tri-hull designs that in this case are so cool as to bring the Batmobile designs to mind!!:):)

HCB has long been known for producing some of the largest center console designs from the USA. Talk about a super bad SC this one really stood out at the show. They had just brought the boat up from FLIBS 2018 where they reportedly took orders for several of this size and the larger size. Some were destined for Dubai to be tenders for superyachts!!:):) It is great to see a boat designed and built in the USA to be of such quality and forward thinking design! For a day boat or overnighter that is a fishing machine, large family, or fast cruiser this might deserve a second look! https://hcbyachts.com/suenos/ This baby has some serious horsepower attached! If you really want to go whole hog then go for quad 627SVs that will supposedly propel you in the poker run in excess of 60 knots!!!! The hair on my arms is already standing up on its ends!!!!!:): ):)

Hey - Disxo! Welcome back. Have missed your FLIBS Fotos but Tom and Carl have filled in the blanks. I'll never forget when Carl and I visited your home after your accident. If I have a survey in your neck of the woods, I'm counting on you to find the local Rustic Inn. Sorry to see you leave SoFla, but all good wishes in your new abode.

    Hi Judy,

I miss seeing you all at FLIBS!! Downtown Norfolk is amazing. I do know the lay of the land as "On August 18, 1680, the justices of Lower Norfolk County, acting on the strength of the act passed by the Virginia Assembly two months earlier, instructed the sheriff of the county to notify John Ferebee, the county surveyor, to begin the survey of the townsite on October 7, 1680. The justices also requested that all interested citizens be notified from the pulpits of the churches of the proposed establishment of the town, adding that anyone who cared to be present when the survey began was welcome. By October 19, 1680, the survey had been made, and Ferebee was paid "for surveying the towne land and officiating as Cl(erk) of the Militia." Exactly one year later, on October 19, 1681, Ferebee received another payment "as Clerke of the Militia & laying out the Streets of the Towne." http://www.historicforrest.com/norfolkHistoricalSociety/highlights/07.html

Anytime you come to the region I would love to give you the Cook's Tour and arrange for a place for you to stay!

    Until we meet again,

Good to see Hydrasport doing it outside of FL. They boats were packed at FLIBs. I have a smaller 33’ hydra and the ratio to fun vs pain in the ass is off the charts compared to the Big boat we have. I really get how people are moving towards 40-50 center consoles. Invite as many friends as you want and you don’t have to worry about chillers, stabilizes, laundry, and other hotel services not working. Just get lots of Ice and a dozen friends and have pure fun!
