I've run the 40' in every configuration and with every power package. I have never found them to be wet. The fastest 40' is actually the Zues boat with a 33-34 knot cruise, the MAN 800's only cruised it at 32 knots. Was the boat incredibly low on fuel? You can always cruise the MANs slower, but I've always ran all of them at 80% cruise all day, sea state permitting.

When I bought my Cabo I remember the first time operating the boat and I too felt it had more horsepower than was necessary. Then over time I became used to the immediate response when in and out of gear and now I think the MAN R6 800's are the perfect pair for the boat. They are very smooth and no matter how the boat is loaded you never over load the engines. I just returned last night from a long range trip where I ran 225nm to a distant fishing port and would blow in salt ice (fish boxes and a pair of large coolers) to fish offshore with 6 people. The boat always has power to spare when running 30 knots in the ocean then engines are jogging at 75% load. I am not sure there is a smaller engine package on the market I would go with. The Cummings QSM 11 intrigues me but I hear to many negative things about the dry exhaust. I at one time was negative on MAN engines and the expensive maintenance but that was before I owned a boat with MAN engine. After 2 years running them I really like them.

For being wet I am not sure what you are speaking of? Maybe the mist in the cockpit that develops while underway? Definitely not the ride. The boat has quite a bit of flare and in my experience the ride is why so many people consider it the best 40ft Sportfish built.

I was not at the helm, I was an angler. I am only reporting to you that the vessel's roostertail got everyone in the cockpit wet (not misted) and we all went inside to dry off. Granted the MAN's can be run wot, but we weren't anywhere near that. The next day we switched over to the 35 and it ran dry and more comfortable. Later that week we moved aboard a 50 Topaz and we extremely satisfied with that performance as well.

I don't think when people are referring to a boat being wet they are referring to the cockpit. That is called the station wagon effect which most 40 to 55ft Sportfishers are known to have. A wet boat is when running and spray is coming from the bow and sides accumulating on the windshield.

At least that is my interpretation.

Didn't see the 50 Topaz on the fleet list for that resort, was it a visiting SF?

The 50' Topaz is a rare animal. only one FB and one Express built, not a commercial success or a pretty face either....

No not currently in their fleet. It was called the Captain Hook. But it want the first boat there with that name - that was a 43 Willis.

If they had more of a Jarret Bay flare you wouldn't get wet

Moisture in the cockpit while running 30 knots has nothing to do with bow flare fyi.

Maybe not for you. But sit down in the cockpit, not near the stern and see how you like it. A flared bow keeps pretty everyone dry IMHO.

The 40 Cabo has plenty of bow flare. I don't want to derail a good thread any further proving that. The station wagon effect of many Sportfish style boats has little to do with bow flare but rather a number of other factors.

It has nothing to do with a flared bow. It has to do with airflow over the hardtop and sides of the house creating a vacuum which sucks the spray from the stern wake/ rooster tail forward. If the hardtop was at a different angle or they had some airflow open in the front like the vent window it wouldn't happen.

From everything I've heard, neither they nor Mag Bay have any problems with how the boats are perceived, just a problem building enough to meet the demand.

Who is building them now? Same molds or like Bertram, new boats with an old name??

Same people who built the last Cabos' and built the 45 Hatteras which was a Cabo in a prior life. They're definitely new molds as you'd expect with the time that's passed but very similar to the old.

Cabo is building them (well Hatteras), in 2011 I think it was Cabo moved into the Hatteras plant and Cabo's were built there for 2 years or so before being shelfed. The 44' HTX Cabo became the Hatteras 45' EX (with the rub rail up going through a minor-medium facelift. They've sold 4, 41's so far. 1 is almost completely completed aside from a few minor things and will be at the Miami show, the others will be done in a few months. It appears the windshield is different.

From what Hatteras/Cabo told me they are using the existing molds with some minor updates. Most notable is an update to the prop pockets.

Will be interesting how boat performs with the smaller Volvos they are opting to use for power.

The customer ordered it that way. I would guess that it would still cruise 28 knots. I've run tons of 40' Cabo's, the 600 HP Zues pods cruised 33 knots in a tower boat (this was the ideal setup for that boat in all aspects, speed, fuel economy, performance, ride, room in the engine room). 800 HP Man's 31-32 knots in a tower boat. The 700HP C12 cats, 30 knots in a hard top boat.

I would imagine that the next ones might have different power, but I'm not sure.

Isn’t Hatteras against using Mans? I’ve only seen Cats or MTUs for new builds. It’s a shame as the new 2000hp Man V12 would have great performance for their new 65.
