General thoughts - positive and negative on 53 meter "Itasca"? Built in 1961, J & K Smith as a tug, converted to yacht in 1979. Thanking you in advance.

Itasca is an incredible go anywhere yacht, one look at that bow and you can imagine it riding nicely in the biggest seas you can find. The refit was incredible, under a real knowledgeable owner and it really is a special vessel afloat.

Which refit are you referring to? She's had a few through the years. The original conversion that took place in Puerto Vallarta in '78-'79 wasn't incredible but rather problematic in itself. Agreed that she's an incredible sea boat and she should be with a draft of 18 ft. Million of dollars have been spent through the years to keep this gal going and in sea shape but I was last aboard in Bermuda for a couple days in 2008 and she needed a "system's refit" then. Plumbing was at the critical stage yrs. ago but the owners were keen on refitting the interior and exterior rather than the unseen guts of the vessel.

The one on 1994 before they conquered the Northwest Passage, and yes, there have been others since.

It is certainly a period yacht, one to stand apart from the crowd with capabilities that only a handful can match.

Interesting site. Along with 71,000 gals of fuel Itasca has technical water ballast capabilities of 60,000 gals or so when lite on fuel to keep her deep and stable in a seaway.
