I'm in negotiations to purchase a 1987 offshore sedan Boat appears to be in great shape but found out that the fuel tanks are made of black steel. Very difficult to check out any rust problems etc. but does anyone have experience in dealing with this or any other model as far as black iron tanks an how long do thees tanks usually last before replacements needed ? Replacement would seem to be extremely expensive. All comments would be appreciated. Thanks

From what I've heard, the main culprit for rusted black iron tanks is from deck leaking down onto the tanks or water migrating under them and theytth not raised off the base so they sit in the water.

30 year old steel tanks. It's a better built boat. Maybe a better installation.
Are there any inspection hatches or access for hatches to be installed?

It's a gamble, I've seen many and much older holding up well in varied brands.
I've seen some failures in 15 year old boats also.

Have the drained and scoped inside for rust, happens a lot with steel tanks, many are ok.

I would be surprised if a surveyor would pass it without the interior of the tks being checked, it can be done and worthwhile if the boat is worth it, peace of mind when cruising is critical.
