    Hello all:

I have a 5539 Carver Californian that has older electronics. When I purchased the boat in San Diego which is where we still are the boat was basically a floating Condo for a couple from Scottsdale and so I have had to do quite a bit of deferred maintenance, as well as figuring things out. As far as electronics it has the following:
Simrad Auto Pilot AP22 works well but want to figure out how to link to my Furuno GPS.
Furuno Navnet chart plotter and sounder: the sounder was turned off and so I had do figure that one out. I would like to get a second one so that I can avoid the slit screen
Furuno GP32 small unit can't really figure out it's usefulness but have a side story for another time suggesting this is good to have.

Now for my post. It has a good old Raytheon R41XX Raster Scan Radar with CRT display it is an old unit but works well with the 48" open array Radar that it has 4kw I believe. I want to start doing some upgrades myself and I think this is a good place to start but not sure if I need to replace the Array and everything or if I can use the array and upgrade the screen. Advice. I will add pictures.

Unfortunately these radar units don't have any upgradeable parts. So if you feel the need to upgrade then it's a complete exchange.
These older units were typically pretty solid so it may have value for you on the used market if you take care not to slice up the cables on removal.

My Ratheon RXX parts are long gone. My contacts do not have any left either.
Piles of Pathfinder and E-clasic stuff.
Since you have other vendors involved, you may want to lean towards one of them. I do push the Simrad over Fur-oh-no.
If you have a well fed check book, don't mess with old or use equipment, stay with a mfg and always purchase new. AND,, a real tech to install it.
Your warranties will pay for them self.
(Do as I say,,, Not as I do)..

I have a luv / hate relation with Garmin.
They seem to be in for the long haul. They now own Navionics and some other software companies.
Their aviation equipment is top shelf I understand.
They do have very good products.
It's still a niche that networks to itself well.

I think of Garmin as Apple vs Microsoft. It's a different way to do it. It takes a few extra steps sometimes, that may not make sense to an old phart.
My top assassinate pushes the Garmin product.

There is still the old school (old phart) in me that believes in KISS.
IMHO, Simrad seems to be better in that direction.

Fur-oh-no seems to get their psychedelics from different suppliers for every different product.

New RayMarine equipment will not talk to new RayMArine products. The classic sell it and fix it in the field after the sell,,,,, mostly.

Good luck on your final vendor choice.
