Mexico Haulout Options before our Pacific Crossing

    We need to haulout on the Pacific Coast of Mexico for some minor work including anti-fouling before our Pacific crossing in Spring. We're looking for a travelift that can handle a 27' beam -- any recommendations would be appreciated. We're currently in Costa Rica heading north and if we don't find a good option in Mexico, we'll have to head up to San Diego -- but a haul-out option in Mexico would avoid the additional 1000 miles up to California and allow us to hop-off for the Marquesas from Cabo.

    What about Marina Pez Vela in Costa Rica. You're approaching their limits as I don't know your weight. They can handle 200 Tons to 28'6".

    Perhaps Opequimar in Puerto Vallarta. I don't know what they can handle but they do have a boatyard.

    Marine Group in Puerto Los Cabos should be able to handle it.

    They can handle 150 tons, 28' beam per their web site. Larger they refer to their San Diego facility.

    Many thanks fro the quick reply. A 200 ton lift is more than enough (we're a light-build catamaran) but I should have been more precise with my original post -- our beam is 27 feet so we're ideally looking for a minimum 30 foot travelift. On this basis, we actually rejected Marina Pez Vela last month and shifted our sights to Mexico.

    Many thanks for the suggestion of Opequimar but unfortunately it seems to only have a 22 foot max beam travelift.

    Any other suggestions from members would be much appreciated!

    How are they an option and Marina Pez Vela isn't? Are you thinking the actual width of their lift might be more than they're stating?

    A few reasons -- probably more detail than needed here but to answer your question, we're planning the Pacific crossing for February/March and looking for a haulout nearer our hop-off point which is Cabo -- so a Mexico haulout is ideal as per my original post. In addition, our skipper has lived in Costa Rica for years and hasn't the greatest confidence in the quality of work (no idea if Mexico will be a significant improvement though). Finally, we're already in the Northwest Corner of Costa Rica en route to Nicaragua and not keen to double-back ;) I just wanted to keep it simple by stating that we're looking for something closer to a 30 foot Travelift since that would be ideal -- if we can't find anything on that scale, the 28' Marine Group lift in Cabo sounds like a great option and we'll check into their experience hauling a 27' beam ;)

    How long would it take you to do the trip from Cabo San Lucas on to San Diego if you decided to do that?

    It's 770 miles running 24 hrs per day at 10 knots typically ...so 77 hours if you clear out of Mexico from Cabo and you don't have to stop for fuel in Turtle Bay.

    At times you can run faster during the day ...if the weathers nice and you've got the fuel to burn.

    Pretty spot on but add 200 nm for the additional distance from San Diego to the Marquesas versus Cabo across ;) Standard cruise is 18 knots but for maximum fuel efficiency on passage we cruise at 10 knots, burning 45 liters per hour (12 gallons/hour) including the genny. Assuming 100 hours extra for Cabo-San Diego-Marquesas we're looking at 1200 gallons extra needed just to haul in San Diego plus the time and added complexity. We carry 13 metric tons of fuel so refueling between Cabo and San Diego isn't an issue.

    Nothing. Was just curious as to the impact if you couldn't get the work done in Cabo San Lucas. I didn't know your cruising speed.

    Has anyone had personal experience with Marina Riviera Nayant in Puerta Vallarta which has a 32' beam 150 ton travelift -- any comparison with Marine Group in Cabo would be a big help. Many thanks in advance!

    I had work done, bottom paint, at Abaroa in La Paz, was well pleased with price and quality on my 70 Ft Stephens.

    When we operated in the Pacific, we had our bottom jobs done in Mexico. They put the same paint on our commercial vessel as the Navy. Good stuff - lasted more than ten years.
