From one who's sailed on deep sea vessels for nearly 25 years as a USCG deck officer, many of those years as Master, a word to the ignorant: 1) Vigilance. 2) Speed commensurate with your ability to see-meaning able to stop in 1/2 the visible range. 3) Maintain a Dark wheelhouse-Glass cockpits be damned. 4) Most importantly-Look out the window!!

This did not have to happen!!
So sad. So stupid. Such a waste.

(years ago) We shared Government Cut inlet with the Miami response team and companies (we had KB). It seemed that the north jetties got a lot more hits than the south jetties.
We always responded to offer a third hand as did our friends and competitors to us.
I'm a late reader here. Can somebody please confirm the direction the boat was heading. I think I'm reading south bound.
Fisher, Virginia & KB lights are not to bad a night.
That looks like the south jetty and Fisher Island in the back ground.
I have witnessed a few jetty hits where the boat actually flips over the rocks and at first seems to have hit on the side where found.
I can't imagine (it happens) a speed boat in the channel and still hit the rocks.

Not a local news fan (sux). Anybody out there have a real event, direction & time line (less local media BS).

South bound and North Jetty hit. See the red marker in the background right behind the jetty.

That may well be the case, but he wasn't fishing earlier that morning. At 2:00 AM he was at American Social Bar, along the Miami River in Brickell. Police are interviewing employees there.

I think in broad terms we pretty much all know what happened. We've (most of us) been there done that. Whether it was a fast boat or a fast car, no matter. Most of us survived, some didn't.

Well, I don't understand why people don't learn. I learned from seeing what happened to others. I hope some learn from this horrible accident and hate to see another young person, actually 3 young men, die in this way.

He had a black bag with his wallet and 4 signed baseballs aboard. It washed up on shore and was turned in.

“Yo, please be careful bro,” Bernal told Rivero, 25. “Try to keep him close to shore.

I guess he did. Most people don't realize it's safer away from land.

    Old aviation saying:
Be careful, fly low and slow...

Looks like these guys crashed where I used to anchor my sailboat over the years:
Tucked in North of the jetty and East of South Beach.
Sometimes it would be nice and calm in the corner and if far enough from the beach, no bugs. Also easy staging for an early morning Gulf Stream Crossing.
Never thought of somebody coming South at full blast inside the reach of the jetty.
    ****..

CNN reporting señor Fernandez had cocaine in his system in addition to having a BAC of .147

It has not yet been determined who was driving.

Recent article in the local rag (Miami Lib-herald) didn't mention drugs as toxicology reports were kept under wrap but that all three bodies had a strong alcohol smell

While not confirmed who was driving, the circumstances and history would strongly indicate Fernandez.

Unfortunately, several people made unwise decisions that night. I hope in all the praise and talk of heroism, that a profound message comes out too. Going drinking at that time of night and then jumping into a boat. The fact that he didn't just cause his own life to be lost but two others. Also, friends need to stop friends. I don't know what was going on in Jose's life that night that had him so bothered. This is a true tragedy in the sense of great Greek tragedies. Someone who fought so hard to get to the US. One of the best young pitchers the game has seen. Then the fall. I know it's left some teammates, who were close to Jose and said "no" that night and discouraged him, wondering if they'd gone with him could they have stopped him after the club. They are carrying that pain on top of the pain of losing their friend.

Got to movie these professional athletes .... cocaine, twice the legal limits, kills two passengers and gets a parade.
