The above Tecumsch compressor is what is currently on one of my FX-16c unit which I'm going to replace. Its R22 freon. It still works but has been clattering for the past 3 years so its only an amount of time. When I look up this compressor to buy it says 15k btu and this unit is 16k. Any issues or is this normal. Thanks
If that's the direct replacement, I'd say it's normal. If the entire system is over 10 years old, I'd recommend running it till it dies and switching the entire unit for a new one that's R410. I've seen them be noisy and last a long time. Because at that age either the heat exchanger or fan coils are going to go next.
Water cooled has higher btu output than air ooled, air cooled output is usually quoted. Have not heard great things about R410 here locally, I have 7 of ther22 units and are easily replaced if neccessary. I flush them twice annually with lots of fresh water and keep copper piecs in the intake screens.
Think I'm going to give it a try. Friend will do install for a reasonable price and compressors are around $450. The evaporator portion of this unit was replaced about 3 years ago.
Can you elaborate on this? I am curious. I've heard people say the new equipment is not as good as the old but never any real reasons why. I will probably need to replace my 36 year old unit and don't really have any idea what my options are.
Your potential for a leak is higher where the copper tubes are braised to the unit because R410 runs much higher pressures, but that's about it. I'd much rather pay $10lb for R410 than 3-6x that for R22. I put a R410 16k BTU package unit in a boat 2 years ago now, zero issues with it. The air temp out of the duct is 34F with an infrared gun and the unit it replaced blew 46F and with the turbo blower it works a lot better. Skip, if you replaced the evaporator unit 3 years ago, then go ahead and change the compressor. About the only other place your unit could fail is the heat exchanger. Pressure switches are cheap if they fail. You might want to do the heat exchanger at the same time as the compressor and you'll probably get another 10 years out of the system.
