    Paint Scheme???

Anybody have pictures of the early comet paint scheme. I believe the early 1962's had a red bottom, white hull, dark blue stripe and a Turquoise top. Any pictures of real comets with this paint scheme would be appreciated.

The photo that you posted is the correct color scheme. I believe the hull is more of an "off White" I found the correct color under some hardware when I removed it. The top side is turquoise. if you remove one of the fiberglass vent covers and use paint remover, you will get down to the original gel coat color. I believe the stripe is a dark green. Either sanding or paint remover (one layer at a time) will get you down to the stripe color, at least that is how I found my colors.

    Hi Guys,

My number is RXE-27-0618, a Custom Comet complete with the aluminum rail and isolated wooden anchor light. This Comet has the wider window as well and I have noticed the same window width phenomenon with the larger Roamers too. 1962 to 1963 appears to be the break point for all the boats. I also like the forward protruding pieces located on either side of the windows on the top of the cabin. Just adds to the style.

According to the original invoice, this Comet was shippd from Holland in July of 1963 if that helps anyone trying to arrange a timeline.

    Herringbone white rubber

My 1963 Silver Comet project is ongoing but nearly complete. I need to find a source for the rubber material that was used on the Captain's and Mate's foot rests and also the swim ladder. Attached is a photo of the white herringbone rubber material needed. If anyone has a clue please respond.

Try Classic Boat Connection. It is available in black and white. He will also have the replacement valve cover decals if you want to dress up the ponies. A google search should get you to the website.

The material may be a little different pattern, small pyrimids is how I would describe them but I think it looks great. Good luck.

I was out for the 4th of July, I had the 27' comet next to my brothers 38' aluminum Regal. Quite the size difference. I still say he is compensating for something. Keep the photos coming on the smaller Roamers. Ray

Nice horn set. Anything remarkable? Engine powered or original DCv compressor driven?

If you are refering to the horns on the 38 footer, they are Kahlenberg Horns from Two Rivers, WI. they were on our fathers 42' roamer and transferred over to the 38. I think they have 5 mile range. They are powered by an independent compressor. They have led a few mairiners into port back in the day when a ship to shore and a compass was all we had to get you home. They are from Kahlenbergs horn class of 200 footers and above, so the they will rumble your world. They are over 50 years old and still look like the day they were produced and sound as good. Thanks for noticing.

    Hi,

Kahlenberg Horns are the best around, I am doing a build where the client wants a 3rd one ( we have to have two by rules )that sounds like the old Queen Mary , if anyone has any ideas where one can be found please feel free to let me know.

with out sounding obvious, you can order any model or Kahlenburg horn from kahlenburg in Two Rivers, WI. They will let you test any model in their "horn room". singles, doubles, triples, up to eleven. They even have a repica of the steam whistle from the Titanic. It stands about 5 feet tall. It has a sound of something you have never heard before. FYI

Trusert, Love the photo. It looks like a twin of mine except I do not have the docking lights in the bow. I did have a "dumb attack" and purchased a 38' offshore last November, and with that I mean that I have me hands full with the Comet. The Offshore is very nice, water ready. It will need some bright work, but a nice addition to the fleet.

Considering purchasing a 1961 silver comet 27'. What was the first year these were produced? We have been told there are only 100 of them made - does anyone know if that is the case? Any idea what they are worth? Thanks

Okay, okay, just noticed all this talk of a '63 Custom Comet 27' and now this somebody's supposed brother's aluminum 38' Regal with a flybridge. I'm sorry but we're gonna need a good story, a complete name and the hull number before we go any further with this tale. Do like the sentiment however, very Roamerische.

Well, I think the number made was closer to 160 and my understanding Comets were made between '62 and '63. My Navel Museum packet listed hull numbers for '62 and '63. If you dig around on the forum you will find plenty of information including the fireboat version.

I keep a watch for them and I know of three comets for sale at present from Florida to Michigan. One is one of the first and has the solid wooden rail which is rare but its in rough shape. So rough, I think you could get it for just about nothing.

Like everything, you can pay just about anything for a comet but it definitely depends on the condition. I have seen asking prices as high as $30,000 which, in my opinion is very high. A Comet like that should be show room quality based upon current market value. Most need work and typically run between $4,000 to $15,000, depending on the condition. These are 50 year old boats that need attention and resources (money) to maintain them. Rapple did a complete restoration on his but you would need to check with him as to what he had to put into it. I'm currently replacing my original port side motor.

But man, I love the lines and look of my Comet. I would love to have a bigger Roamer but this one works fine for what I need.

    But hey, its a boat.
