Maybe so, but it rubbed me the wrong way.
Perhaps I am too sensitive, or just primitive.
(Wife would say yes on the last one.)

Got a decent anchor and rode on the boat today.
What came with the boat was a 14 lbs Delta. Perfect for a smaller boat, or lunch hook on this one, but sold it to
    a neighbor for $100.
Now got a 33 lbs Rocna, 60' High Test 1/4" chain and 75' 1/2" nylon.
Breaking strength of the chain 7,750 lbs, 7,750 for the line and the shackle 9000 lbs.
Displacement of the boat with motors, 7,200.
The weak link would be the anchor with a reported holding power of 5000 lbs in good sand.
(No idea how strong the cleat on the boat is, but supposedly these boats are built like tanks)

    Question:
Does anybody know how to calculate the wind-loads on a boat like this? (if you have the frontal square area)
I would like to think my anchor gear is good for 80 to 100 knots in good sand.
Not planning to camp out in the path of hurricanes, but had enough surprise thunderstorms in the Bahamas at 02:00 packing 40-50 knots. Always had over sized anchors and rodes on my sailboats and my modus operandi has been to turn over in bed and keep on sleeping when the sh!t hits the fan.
Planning on doing just that in the future as well.

Not sure how to calulate wind load, but personally I'd like to see a lot more rode behind the chain, around 200' if you have the room for it. In case you have to anchor in deeper water, or simply want it so you can let out line to get back to a beach or something and can use the windlass to pull you foward to get back into deep enough water to use the engines.

    I agree with Capt J. I'd want 300' total.

So, have you had a chance to get out on it and enjoy yet? I think you're going to love it.

Got plenty of room, 2 big lockers up front, but did not think I needed more, planning to anchor only in Florida and the Bahamas, shallow waters.
Good idea on pulling the boat back to the beach, will try that a few times. I can always splice on more line in needed.

Funny you mention that, the boat came with 300' of line and 15' of chain.
I cut the line into shorter sections: 300' in the bottom of the locker will never dry, hate that musty smell from
wet gear, rust stains and nasty creatures living down there. :D

Nah, not yet. Bad weather and all.
Been up and down the river a few times and been waxing between showers.
Slowly getting the boat ready for prime time, but need to take it in for a 20 hr. motor service before I can go to the regular 100 hrs intervals.

If you splice it, it probably won't feed through the windlass. However, I would want more, for various reasons.......you can't always plan where you want to anchor....so if you're stuck in 60-70' the above combo will keep you covered..... Perhaps put some of that rubber cross lattice pieces West Marine sells for putting on the deck (that you stand on) in the bottom of the locker...... it will keep the rode elevated.

I think everyone intends to anchor in shallow water but it just doesn't always work out that way. Also, there's that possibility of trouble of some sort that you just want to anchor to sort it out.

Possible, but there is already a splice on the rode: Chain/Line:
No problem feeding manually thought, small boat, lightweight gear.

True, can't always plan where to anchor, but so far, in 15 years of Florida/Bahamas boating, I have always been able to get to my destination, then put the anchor down.
I suppose if one ran out of fuel, it would be wise to anchor while awaiting assistance instead of drifting to Greenland.

True enough, but in case of emergency I will carry a spare anchor and rode and should be able to tie them together in less than 5 minutes.
The second rode will be 15' of chain spliced to 100' of 5/8 octa braid line and shackled to a light Fortress aluminum anchor.

    Noooo...
I moved to South Florida for 2 reasons: Palmtrees and sunshine.
Unless Global Warning speeds up a tad, Greenland will most likely not sport either Palmtrees or sunshine in the near future.

Probably should plan on a much longer anchor rode so I don't have to find out personally. :D

    Morse dude
Take the hint(s), you are short of primary rode. 20 foot depth X 7 scope ratio (pluse freeboard) is over 140 feet. 7 to 1 is the min before I can sleep well at night.n The first 60 of chain is real cool but please consider adding another 100 feet of backing nylon for the over 20 depth surprises. Lots of scope is SOP if you want to sleep well.

Sleep well and think of large women.

Aye, you dudes are all ganging up on me.
What I got for anchor gear will be just fine for now.
Deepest I have anchored the last 17 years was Key Weat at 20' feet.
This boat will probably be docked at marinas more than anchored as I don't have a dink for it.
New kind of boating for this old sailor.
Be fun to try and you all can sleep good, my gear is perfect for the intended use. :D

I do like that new Rocna anchor. You have to tell us how it works. I thought the Delta style was good.

Aye mate, I know how the Rocna works: Had one on previous boat since 2007, imported from Canada.
The 44 lbs Rocna held better on the sailboat than previous 55 lbs Delta.
Anchored hundreds of times with each anchor in the same anchorages, the Rocna is great amd the 33 lbs should be plenty overkill for this here Glacier Bay 27.
(No, I don't have stock in the company)

Will look for the movie The Princes Bride, I am sure Netflix got it..

Started a Fartbook Group for Glacier Bay Owners and fans as our forum (admin edit: the Glacier Bay forum, unrelated to YF) is severely infected with spam and porn links. (And most of it in Russian )

Glacier Bay Folks, come and join, bring pictures of boats and bikini girls.

Porn links must be on your computer, perhaps google ads based on your previous usage. lol.

The spam was Korean and was quickly removed. So have you made any trips on your GB? Enjoying it as much as you thought you would? I'm betting you're very happy with your decision. Just think though you could be working on repairing an old Albin right now.

    Yeah, enjoying the boat.
Only been to Miami, No-Name Harbor and Elliot Key so far.
Good boat, but still getting the bugs worked out.
(You think a new boat would be ready to roll right?)
Both the factory and the dealer have demonstrated a lack of attention to details, but will have that sorted out under warranty shortly when she goes in for the first service.

That's Russian but I never saw that on this site. You're having other things happen.

Glad you're enjoying the boat. Sorry about attention to details. That is annoying.
