With prop speed though, there is very little margin for error. Prep has to be perfect, and application has to be done in under 3-4 minutes. Bottom paint has quite a bit larger margin for error.

Yes, but there are professionals who know what they're doing. Definitely not for the DIY'er who has never done it.

True. It is almost all zinc and does contain the exact same ingredients as the Petit barnacle product but at 1/3 the price. I have had good results.

Yep, bend over, we are professionals, we are here to help, this won't hurt much $$$.

We are forgetting, this is a over priced product that some people think works.
If less check books were opened to the hype, the price would quickly come down.

I'll remain open to the hype. I can't be sure how much it's doing but I don't want to stop it and find out.

Just got back for a bunch of yards in Italy and asked about prop speed....they say not used much. I did notice many of the big boats (30-45m) were using a white pant on props?

Most likely Interlux tri-lux white. It's been out for decades at least 1 or 2 decades anyways. It does a good job but boats that cruise over 20 or 25 knots, it doesn't usually stick too well. Although on the Sunseeker I manage that cruises at 29 knots, we use it on the swim platform brackets and stuff which is out of the water when on plane, then prop speed on the running gear.

View attachment 73412 I don't know why I'm overthinking the prop speed this year as I've used it 10 times. I guess it was the yard wanting to change to prop one. I'm estimating the yard does 10 boats a week with prop speed. I stopped by yesterday and talked to owners and looked at a couple of boats with prop one. By all accounts, it looks, acts, lasts and costs the same as prop speed. The yard just felt like they were having too many quality issues with prop speed and the company wasn't standing behind the product. They're the ones doing the work and they do stand behind their work so I have to respect what they say. I heard the same story from another yard that does a lot of Vikings.

I did an underwater inspection of my boat yesterday at 15 months on the bottom job. The picture below is from a haul out at 4 months by a surveyor. At any rate, at 15 months all the prop speed is gone from my props and rudders. trim tabs and shafts are still completely covered and cleaned with a cloth. The micron has held up extremely well. No wear at the water line and the bottom is perfect. Highly unusual for me to get that much life out of it but I'm in a pretty still canal. The props have been scanned and the boats just runs out perfect so I'm going to keep doing what I've been doing. I'll just wait a couple of more months. I'll try the Prop One and another coat of Micron after proper prep.

For now, the boat is clean and the weather looks decent this weekend. Time to use it instead of analyze it.

If you've had such good results with prop speed, keep it. Why change to the unknown? I'd just tell the yard you want to stay with prop speed. I think 14 months is about all you're going to get on props and rudders if you're using the boat a bit and pretty darn good actually.

Actually I'd have some concerns regarding the yard and application. If they're having problems with Prop Speed, they're going to have the same ones with Prop Gold. On the other hand, I know yards having no problems with Prop Speed and they probably wouldn't have any with Prop Gold either. 14 months is 2 months more than any of them promise. Now in some situations you get more. As to the reason Prop Speed didn't "honor warranty" that reason is generally because application was the problem, not the product. The yard we use knows that and if it fell off prematurely, say 4 months or 6 months, they would replace it, but that's the yard warranty of their work.

I can't say at all what the quality of Prop Gold is, just that the application is much like Prop Speed so same delicate situation. I was just reading Velox's page and the point they make about improper sanding being the number one cause of failure and basically saying to be sure the person applying it knows what they're doing and has read the instructions because "PYI cannot warrant or guarantee the workmanship performed by any person or firm installing its products."

These products are just like bottom paints. When some of their trusted dealers start having frequent trouble then they'll respond, but until they they are going to, rightly or wrongly, blame it on application. Awlgrip certainly tried to do that until they were overwhelmed with problems from people they were sure knew what they were doing.

The other issue is if the running gear is experiencing electrolysis either from it's boat or one in close proximity, it will peel/burn the paint right off of the running gear. Any type of paint. Prop speed/trilux etc.

I used Propspeed on a Pershing with shafts I use to handle for one of my clients, and I can testify what everyone said about the quality of Propspeed.

It is not cheap here in Europe, but it is the best propeller running gear paint I have found.
With sea temperature reaching an average 27 degrees Celsius in Malta central Mediterranean it is not easy to find the right paint for the props, but Propspeed has been spot on the two times I have used it.

I'm taking the yard comments at face value. Again, they are doing 10-20 applications per week on some of the highest dollar boats in Ft Lauderdale. They probably got a couple of batches that were off. As you point out, there are some very costly and expansive examples of gel coat and paint makers saying it was an application issue.

I'm having the prop one put on. If it doesn't hold up I"m sure they'll fix the problem.

I wish you luck. I'm much too conservative to switch from what is tried and true and working for me. Even if the new one is a better mouse trap, if the mouse trap I currently have is catching all the mice, I'm happy.

Obviously, I'm not a good candidate for trying new products. Even on technology I prefer to be six months behind on new products.

Back late last year when boat was painted in Palm Beach Gardens I decided to have the bottom and running gear painted while out of water. Instead of Prop Speed which I have used every year since owning the boat 8 yrs they suggested Prop Blast by Pettit. Its a spray can application. Said they have had good success with it. Now its been on all the running gear since November and diver said everything looks great. He dives boat every month. Now the warm season begins so we will see how well it holds up. If it holds up here with our dirty barnacle waters it should work most anywhere. I'm skeptical but will see.

A little more info. Was Prop Blast less expensive? I'll be interested to hear how it works out. I'll keep everyone posted on the Prop One I had applied. I trust the yard. The boat ran right on the numbers when I sea trailed it after haul out. Time for me to stop worrying about a bunch of this stuff and start using it!

    Tom,
Yes definitely less expensive and no difference in performance.

Due to yard fault i was left with uncovered prop and shaft.
Someone knows a material I can apply under water ?
my other option is to wait a year to the next haulout.

If it's yard fault, why wouldn't you have them haul it out now at their expense and rectify their mistake?
