New 55 Hatteras SF, 1271TI's

    Just purchased her this past weekend in Panama City and are looking forward t many years of cruising. I'm flying back down on Thursday observe the survey. One of the cleanest 1980 Hatts I've seen in a while. Woop Woop.

    Congratulations, should be a good combo with 12v71's TI's. I ran one and it handled better than the 52' and 53's and was more stable in a beam sea and a good all around boat. I think the one I ran cruised 22-23 knots at 1950 rpms with a fiberglass Hardtop.

    This particular 55' Hatteras SF that I picked up in Biscayne Bay in Miami and had to run to Lighthouse Point, must have been sitting and not run for AT LEAST a year. After checking all of the fluids, I started them up and they rolled over a long time before kicking, when they did the mate and I had to RUN to the street in front of the house about 120' away because the blue smoke was so bad you couldn't see 40'. Anyways after about 10 mins it cleared up and they were idling fairly ok at that point, so we let them warm up another 10 mins, left the dock, go to the bay, I brought them up to 800rpms and they blue smoked a bit, then 1000 rpms for a few mins and they blue smoked about 5 mins.....so I brought them up to 1350 rpms where the turbo's started building a touch of boost and huge smoke screen behind the boat for 5 mins and cleared up......I brought them up to 1950 rpms and they smoked a bit for 2 mins and cleared up, ran her cruise all of the way to Hillsboro Inlet and they ran clean ever since. Boat ended up going to Jacksonville without issues eventually.

    Boat had 24 brand new (not reliabilt) AC DELCO injectors in the boxes on it and many other spares.....believe it or not......

    No of course not. She is having all the usual contractual things performed such as a survey, and an engine survey performed before final bucks change hands.

    I've had my 54' Bertram for so many years that I was pleasantly surprised about a few things. The engine room is huge. Hatt has a much better machinery layout than I'm used to. She also is the galley down model thus making the salon wonderfully spacious. Oh and she has 3 brand new AC units, and a 13' hard bottom Avon tender with a brand new 60 hp Yamaha 4 stroke. I'll take delivery next week.

    Update. Couple of delays have pushed closing day to the 16th or 17th of Nov. Surveys are all checking out good. Insurance is all set. So we are getting excited about our new toy.

    What made you switch from a 54' Bertram to a 55' Hatteras?

    Nothing in particular. I only sold my Bert because someone made me an offer I couldn't say no to. So far, here are some of the differences I have noted. Hatteras has a huge machinery room vs Bertram. The reason being that Hatteras puts all the fuel in two tanks built into the bottom of the hull. Bertram has two 300 gal tanks standing in the engine room.
    The hatteras is also considerably slower. My Bert would run a solid 32 knots with a light load of fuel. The Hatt will do 25 knots with a light load. With the fuel tanks taking up bilge space I am anticipating that running new plumbing or wiring will be a challenge. In my Bert, I could have made the forward bilge area into a small swimming pool.
    The Hatt is a galley down boat. This gives a HUGE salon. I think this is the one feature we will enjoy the most.
    Can anyone recommend a good prop shop in Panama City Fl?

    I don't know of any prop shops in the Panama City area. Might be worth sending them down to Frank and Jimmy's in lauderdale, although the props on your boat are not high tech so someone local with a good reputation should be able to handle it.

    Wiring chase on the Hatteras shouldn't be an issue, usually on the side of the boat under the gunnel height and accessable. The Hatteras is a lot more stable on the beam.

    I can't stand the 54' Bertram engine room or the pool area in the bow. The pool area is too short height wise for me to bend over through the hatch and easily get around, then Bertram routed wiring or something across that deck that you have to scoot over. Same with the engine room, that bulkhead in the aisle will kill you to get to the gens, then they're sandwiched 10" from the fuel tanks and to get to the outbound side will kill you after stepping on wiring harnesses and everything else they ran in the way.

    Yep, I will surely not miss the Bertram engine room. Anyone know of a phone App that provides up to date marina fuel prices??

    Think BoatUS had something like that.
    But, the data is only as good as the updates (if/when) received.

    Active Captain may help direct you to better prices and safer docks to purchase from.

    Don't forget to call because many fuel docks will offer discounts off of their prices for volumes of 500,1000 gallons etc. as well.

    try intercoastal propeller in gulf shores alabama, he is a prop scan shop. best thing i did for my 1972 58 hatteras yachtfish. smoother and a little more speed traditional prop repair

    Took delivery on Monday and promptly put her on the hard. Bottom job, recondition the props an shafts, install new sounder, name and buff out the hull. Also will have DD tune both engines.
    We are very happy with her. Will bring her around to St Simons Island in Jan or Feb.

    Put her back in the water on Dec. 4th. She ran great no real issues on the 4 hour run back to Port St. Joe. Took 2 inches out of the props. She is spec'd for 32"x32" and had 32"x 34" props. She wouldn't get above 1900 rpms. After a fresh bottom job, prop work, trim tabs repaired, had DD tune both engines, I got her up to 2350 rpms and 25Knots. Oh, I also had her full of fuel and water. I'm a happy boy.

    Question; What was her no-load hi idle rpm. Should be on the tune up report.
    your wot loaded at 2350 may be the governor holding her back.

    On the other hand, after we moved on out Bert, clothes, tools, spares, pets and wife,,, we did loose a bunch of rpm.

    Do you figure on moving more weight on board?
