    I am considering using these in a new build as opposed to MTU 94 v-10 at 1622hp. I read that the MAN engine has a better torque curve and am told it runs quieter and reaches peak hp at lower RPM. Both engines fit. Any comments about either, good or bad would be appreciated.

    Have you looked at the Caterpillar C32? Your bank balance will be a lot healthier than owning and operating either of the German brands listed.

    I think the 1625 Cats will fit but I was told they are a bit louder - I was trying to take the HP up a bit and larger CATs won't fit, any comments about price differential or noise levels?

    Have not heard good things about the MTU V-10's and that's why I'm looking at the MAN's but would be happy to consider CATs especially if larger one's would fit

    One of the questions I'd ask is which engine and engine manufacturer the builder has the most experience with. If I'm buying a Hatteras, I'm getting CAT's. If I'm buying a Riva or Sunseeker, I'm going for MAN's. If I'm buying a Westport, I'm going MTU. We have MAN's and MTU's. Like both.

    Noise isn't much of an issue, you can probably improve sound insulation for a lot less money than the MAN maintenance cost.

    Do yourself a favor and get routine maintenance costs for both the MANs and CATs then add them up over the first 1500 hours...

    One thought;
    Service and cost of service..

    Good MAN techs are far and few between. In South FL are a few MTU & MAN shops.

    Else places that MAN ratio drops quickly.

    The Cat's are definately louder, but also have the most torque. MAN's do run quieter and smoother than both CAT and MTU. I'd take The MAN's over MTU's anyday. Haven't seen a catastrophic failure with a rod through the side of the block on any MAN's in a very long time. Have seen a few MTU's with them sticking through the side of the block lately.

    Is the air rush into the turbo, the clatter of the valves and injectors, detonation in the lungs or just over mechanical noise?
    I'm used to a bunch of different Cats. Yep they can get loud.

    I was in-between a pair of 3126s last week. Thought only one was running. Both were indeed idling very well and quiet.
    Just days before, on another boat with same engines, I had to quickly crawl back up for my ear muffs. The mechanical noise was horrific.
    Alexander Marine vs SleRay.

    I have a hunch that the extra Soundown material was really working well on the Alexander.

    I know there is no comparison to a C32, but the sound panels properly installed will help on any beast.

    All this feedback is really appreciated.. I've been running V-12 Man 1224 and and inclined to go with the 1800 for the new ride. I have had good experience for the most part from Man techs in Florida and Connecticut . I think this company knows they have competition

    Valvetrain noise at idle, exhaust noise, running, more vibration. I'm a CAT guy, but C 18's and C32's are definately noisier than their MAN/MTU counterparts. MAN would probably be the quietest.
