You gave two that were not in your range and one that the boat was 5' shorter than your target, so I don't understand how you say you found a few within the budget. One boat you linked to was $699,000. How is that in a $250,000-$500,000 budget?

One question about your budget. Is that purchase price only or including any work that has to be done to get the boat where it's desired? Generally the cost of a purchase of an older boat doesn't end with the purchase price.

Well, as I said before the budget is just general. Just depends on what we're looking at. A good deal is a good deal. And yea, it's purchase price only. There's always things to do to make it yours or little things here and there that will need to be updated, repaired or changed to your liking.

As luck would have it we found a 2002 58 Viking with decent hours on cats in Newport harbor (75 miles from us) asking 550. Looks nice and the location is desirable.

Just read in Sea magazine that a new Viking 62 will run you $4.4 Mill US. Cat C32A power. So $.5 Mill US for a 2002 is amazingly low price for sure. We may all have to get your report on that one.

I would try to shy away from Man's (pre common rail). Man's were all the rage in the SF arena for their power and weight ratio's and such until the C18/C30 cats came out around 2004+/2003. They were lighter weight than most other offerings, fuel efficient and fast for their HP. HOWEVER, once people got to know them they didn't want them anymore. At under 1200-ish rpms they run on one bank of cylinders and smoke/stink real bad and vibrate while trolling, a little costly to maintain, and they had issues with the earlier 1050's and 1350's grenading but came up with a fix for them.

I would try to buy a 61' Viking over a 58. The 58's is a pretty good boat but is wet and pounds a little more than the 61' in a head sea. The 61' is what REALLY brought Viking to the table to where they are today. My second choice would be the 54' Hatteras 2002-2005 with Cat C30's as it is a GREAT running boat. 3rd choice would be a 60' Hatteras SF due to ride etc. or the Viking 58'.

Cat 3412's would be my first preference in that era, then MTU's 16v2000's, then Man's (pre common-rail) would be my preferences......But would take Man over 12v92 DDEC's.

Both of these boats can be great for this use. But, like many sportfisherman style boats they can suffer from very bad "station wagon" effect. That abruptly ending superstructure leaves a low pressure area that fumes love to fill.

Combine the wafting smell of diesel fumes with 10 foot rollers, then add a mix of girlfriends and wives who may not have the strongest sea legs, and partiers can be hanging over the gunwale in no time. Or worse, trying to use your heads like they were purging after a binge week at In-n-Out burger.

My advice, sea trial these boats a lot with people in the cockpit. Upwind, downwind, crosswind. Certain years are worse than others, certain options are worse than others, certain exhaust locations are worse than others. Do not ride on a 2002 60 foot Viking and assume all the rest will be the same. They will not be, they maybe similar, or they may be very different.

If you perfectly advise your friend of every technical detail about the boat he purchases, but he can't use it because the backwash of diesel fumes make his wife or girlfriend sick, then you will have failed.

+1 on this comment. Each model is different and the SF guys have been fighting the cockpit "mist" problem for years. Some manufacturer's definitely are better than others, and some have it figured out for one or two model years but not every single model they have built over the last ten years. The comfort/dryness of the cockpit should be a key marker when you are comparing/sea trialing for purchase.

Yes, I forgot to mention the "misting" that can cover everything on an otherwise beautiful cruise! Good call PacBlue.

No Vikings from 2000+ have the "station wagon effect" ... at all. As a yard mechanic and captain for Viking South from 2002-2005 I never experienced that effect nor ever heard that complaint. BTW there is no such thing as a 2002 60 Viking; doesn't sound like you've been on many Vikings of this time period. Also someone mentioned Cummins engines earlier- no Viking of this size has Cummins. It's MTU, CAT or MAN, period. I second that the 61 Viking is a good choice considering.

It has been my experience as well that all of the Vikings I've ran 2000 or newer have had dry cockpits. Hatteras, some yes and some no.

    Dear Bamboo,
Please allow me to apologize if I in any way offended your delicate ego by giving the OP sound advice on testing a boat for his needs. I am often quite stupid in that way, responding to a person's question when I should really be taking the opportunity to broadcast my credentials to the entire board. I am really impressed that you were a yard captain for Viking South. You must be really smart, a good captain, and I'll bet very handsome.

I also sincerely apologize for making up a random year, size, and manufacturer and using it as a simple tool to help illustrate the idea that each model and year will vary, to a person who asked for help and might not have understood that such variation exists. Since I was not claiming a specific condition existed on the purely illustrative model and year, I did not think it mattered if that specific boat was real or not. In the future, I will research all rhetorical details, even to the tiniest mote of information to insure that I never offend you again.

I wasn't born in Missouri, but perhaps I should have been based on my strong "show me" streak. For some stupid, inane reason I would in fact sea trial any boat I was considering as a purchase in the manner in which I intended to use it. Well, maybe not Vikings from 2002 to 2005.

In conclusion, let me thank you for all the time you have spent on Viking Yachts. It has obviously made you a staunch defender of the brand, even attacking people when they have not in any way attacked Viking Yachts.

    Best Regards,

    Jspiezio

I don't think you offended Bamboo at all. He was just answering your rhetourical BS with the facts. Considering your post had zero factual information in it. Which you now go on to apologize in a very unprofessional and sarcastic way, bordering ridiculing. What are you 12 years old? I've run plenty of Vikings, some of them might not be the dryest boats from spray from the bow, but they do have bone dry cockpits and his post is true and factual.

    Jspiezio;
You did not offend me, nor do I have a delicate ego. I posted accurate information about specifics which you hypothesized about, inaccurately. This forum is filled with professionals of all types in the marine field and folks come here for the depth of knowledge of these professionals. As a group there is strength and depth and I hope to contribute to that while learning from others; which I do frequently.
    As K1W1 often says-
    Cheers.
