As of May23, Polar Bear was moored in Victoria's inner harbour...Victoria, B.C., on Canada's wet coast! Cheers, Richard.

If it was the Polar Bear built by ABC yachts in North Vancouver. I have been on her "sweet boat". Use to run into it up the coast a lot

Polar Bear was built by Aluetian (now Citadel) Yachts in Tacoma WA in 2011. It is a big trawler yacht. You tube has some videos of her interior. It was a nice yacht. Saw it in Roche Harbor a year ago. Too bad this happened.

Does anyone know the cause of the fire? Sad to say it, but she's unrepairable and just a memory at this point. It's a good thing that it happened where it did and doesn't look like any lives or other vessels were endangered.

There was a story on Dockwalk today, supposedly there was some welding being done below decks, the cops had to shoot out the windows so they could get more water into the boat.

They were Aleutian however until they changed their brand name. I think the parent company even kept the Aleutian name, but it was causing confusion as a brand.

    Nice video, thanks.

Does anyone know why all the fire fighters were just standing around? I get the fire was too big to put out but in other large fires I have seen them pouring water on the fire anyway.

Pouring the required volume of water onto a diesel-fueled fire will not end well for the yard, the firefighters, or the open water nearby. Can't get foam in to the source of the fire, so protect the exposures and limit collateral damage.

Judgement call. What's at risk, and what's being saved.

    Hi,

Throwing a lot of water onto burning fuel is just like throwing water into a pan of boiling oil. The resultant eruption will be something to avoid and not something you should try at home folks.

Floating foam over the burning fluid is the only reasonably safe way to deal with and break the fire triangle.

Potential problems with diesel fuel aside it's the above.
There is quite a bit of distance to other yachts and buildings. Most importantly, no lives were at risk.

If assets were closer an option would be to deploy a hydroshield (Aka water curtain. Depending on water pressure the arc is typically up to 30m wide at the base and 10m high at the center.)

Then there is of course the need to watch for the effects of sparks and embers downwind.

The lesson here is that any fire on a yacht is a real problem. There is only very little time to do anything about it, so hit it with everything you have. Don't forget that you'll also need time to evacuate.
