I agree with you...it's not the size of the boat...it's how much enjoyment it brings to you and your family. My Dad used to tell me to wish in one hand, and crap in the other and see which one fills up first. And I also agree with...I believe it was olderboater...it's important to be in the right place at the right time. Find something that is your passion, and then get even better than you are now....and then learn to network. In these days and times...it's not what you know...it's who you know. If your a people person, honest, and a man of your word...you can accomplish more than you know. People who like you and believe in you want to help you and see you get ahead. I only do business with "nice" people, I can't tell you how many times I've walked away from deals, because as mentioned in this thread, I've encountered people who make a living off of circumventing you for their own gain, or dealing with people who do not have good moral fiber, or good business ethnics. I wish you the best of luck. Someone once said "Success is 90% perspiration, and 10% luck."

The best dreams and goals are those you can actually control and achieve and even better when you can set goals that are possible within a short period of time. Most of the time you don't go from start to a hundred million in a day or a year.

But, you can say I want to use my current skills in this way and develop new ability in these areas. I'm going to save and invest my money this way. I'm going to look for employers of this type. I want to learn this in the next five years and then start my own business. Or I'm willing to sacrifice, live on very little, to start my dream business now. I know how hard it will be but I believe in it. And if I fail, then I'll pick up and try again.

As has been said, You don't win the Super Bowl in the spring off season. However, you do start to set the foundation and things in motion that may eventually get you there.

The most important move of my entire career was my job choice when I was starting my career.

It does take a ton of hard work. You have to be smart and in a good position in life. Most of the people I run into boating are self made or have vast family money.

Part of the hard work is having time to go out and play on the water.

Well, if they're still working they rarely have that time. Those are the yachts that sit except for occasional use. Most of their movement is by the captains without the owner. Maybe owner's family enjoys some. And for many it's the same thing athletes face. They just don't want to stop, regardless of what they have. Athlete's retire because they can't do it anymore. That doesn't happen to businessmen.

I don't agree with the hard work part, because it takes hard work just to survive. I see a lot of people working a lot harder than I ever could, and they're doing it for pennies. Making money all about making it a priority. Having the right personality, putting yourself in the right place, smiling at the right people, doing what's needed to develop the right idea and having the courage to follow through. You're going to make many trade-offs along the path. Just be willing to live with them.

I very well could be wrong. But walking up and down the docks at any point of call, I don't see many people who have not been hard workers. I have to bust my rump to keep my toys going.

Only two ways I know to own a big boat. Your family has money or you work for it, and sometimes it's a both of both.

    Hi,

Have you ever noticed how the uber wealthy don't have any buddies?

I am talking about folks you can call when coming to town and arrange to meet for a few beers or shoot some pool.

They do however have "friends" who are about as transparent as cling film on a good day

Or you're a Congress person and can legally trade on insider information. The fact is you get rich the same way you get poor; a series of circumstances align.

Acquaintances, but not friends. Everyone they meet is through business. No personal socializing.

When you have money every relationship is suspect. If my wife married me or my friends are with me for my money, they've been sorely disappointed.:D I've actually limited my income on many occasions over the years, and I'm glad for it. Maybe it's the old hippie in me, but money is the least important thing in my life.

They are quite married. I didn't mean to imply 100%, but it's a very limiting environment.

It truly is laughable. I thought about posting earlier, but I didn't want to de-rail the thread. I was going to say...

"I can tell you how NOT to get rich. Start a yachting forum!"

Seriously, YF has afforded me a nice collection of RC helicopters, but I still can't afford a boat!

Nice heli's. I can fly the real thing, but those are tricky. I'm sure those are way more responsive than my cheapie 400 was.

In this market, are you sure there isn't an 80's 40-45 footer hanging on your wall? Lol

Come on Carl. We all know that the best boat in the world is the one your friend owns (let him have the expense and hassles. You show up with the beer.) And you've got a lot of friends with boats.:D

How did you know??? I suppose I wasn't being entirely truthful. I actually do have a boat. It's a mid-80's Donzi sportfish and as SomeTexan eluded, it's hanging on my wall...

    Lmao, now I feel psychic.

I was hinting that the cost of your helicopters was probably similar to the cost of a decent yacht. Unless things have changed since I was into r/c stuff, those things aren't cheap.
