    looks like a lovely beach. I particularly like the random fire in between the two ships.

    lol it looks like one of the toxic beaches from a cartoon show or something. i can't imagine the exposure to hazardous materials those workers are exposed to.

    Nice parking job. If you ever wonder where old ships go to die check Google Earth or Google Images and type in Alang, Gujarat, India.

    What surprised the heck out of me is how the guy parked it right in between the two little boats.....like perfectly.....you saw him oversteer for 30 seconds then steer back and perfectly sandwich it between the two small boats.....

    Hi,

    That popped up on Facebook about a week ago.

    I used to sail with a Captain who had gone to scrap with a Tanker.

    He says it was quite emotional as he had done some of his cadetship on this particular one as they went out to sea and the engine room was called for absolute full power and they just headed in through the waves to the beach and while they still had steam they let the anchor chains out and used the steam to pull it up tight then they were got in the lifeboat and lowered off the back that was still in the water and motored away.

    The GoogleEarth images are depressing. Miles of beach covered in scrap ship hulks and less.

    But the above mentioned video was made at Aliağa, Turkey. Not as big as the srapyard in India but at least as dirty. This turkish family business is meanwhile pretty famous in the European shipping industry.

    If you offer a commercial ship for scrap, the two brothers show up and make a quick survey and then make an offer. If she ship is still operational, they pay cash and pick it up with their own crew. If the ship has to be towed, they try to talk you into a point of handover 3 miles off shore of their scrapyard, what would make the tow to your own risk and costs. You have to make sure to receive the money before handing over the lines, otherwise ....? Pretty tough business men and they make a lot of money! All workers in the company above the lowest level are members of their family. Sons, brothers, cousins, you name it. I bet, they have made an offer for Costa Concordia already :rolleyes:
