I just ran across this thread after researching fishable power cats.

It's a very interesting idea. Does anything aleady exist at least in a prototype form?

Now the Africat 455 is coming to the U.S. market.

Is this what inspired their model? :)

I've been away from this subject thread a long time...

Rather interesting that this 'specialty fishing vessel' of theirs does not depict any pics or drawings to include some equipments that might be required for sport fishing??

I don't know what inspired their model, but it was Lock Crowther's Tara Vana that inspired mine.

    Tara Vana ll

Just a few days ago I received an inquiry about my sailing-gamefishing design vessel from two separate gentleman,...one inquiring about building one, and the other about chartering such a vessel.

I went looking for the old 'Tara Vana' vessel that inspired my thoughts so long ago. Wahoo !!...its in the Caribbean now under new ownership,...and for charter....

New Lagoon 52 moves its Mast Back

Interesting new twist, Lagoon 52 design moves mast aft to carry larger headsails and smaller mainsail.

Just had to post this, as over the years I've had so many naysayers to my idea to use primarily headsails verses the mainsail to drive the boat :p

Scale Model Testing of Sailing Rigs, ...Outdoors

First of all the keywords here is 'outdoors'. Most of us know of wind-tunnel testing on scale models, but wind tunnels themselves are expensive, and time spent in them is expensive. And scaling the results up and down can be a little hit or miss, depending on the scaling 'factors' utilized. So nix the wind tunnels at this point, and lets go to the great outdoors.

I'm looking to perform some far less sophisticated, and far less expensive, side-by-side comparison testing of several different sailing rigs. In this particular case I am just interested in the sailing rigs themselves, not the vessels they are attached to. And since the vessels I have in mind for these rigs are large multihulls, I wish to forgo any heeling considerations. (this should make things even easier)

Many years ago I recall seeing some photos and diagrams in a book by Marchaj and in some publications by the Amateur Yacht Research Society wherein a number of folks where experimenting with different size, small scale rig experiments right out in the great outdoors. Regrettably I no longer have any of those reference dwgs/photos/illustrations.

So I am asking for suggestions and drawings, and whatever,....to make this comparison testing on an inexpensive budget, now that I am retired on a budget. The one advantage that I do have being 'retired' is that I now have a little more free time to do some experimenting.

I have over a good number of years promoted a 'radical' aft-mast sailing rig configuration, and along with that a long ongoing subject thread:
    http://www.boatdesign.net/forums/sailboats/aftmast-rigs-623.html
I've had a goodly number of naysayers posting things like it won't point up into the wind very well, and the backstay tensions are too big, etc.

I want to build 2 test models to be demonstrated right next to one another in the same existing conditions. One rig will be my mast aft configuration, and the other will be a fractional rig sloop of the same sail area....like this
fractional rig sloop.jpg Aftmast ketch rig.jpg Rigs Overlaid.jpg
    http://www.boatdesign.net/forums/sailboats/aftmast-rigs-623-7.html#post198605

Here is one way I am thinking. These will be 'rig only' models that are attached to flat base piece of plywood that might be circular in shape, or maybe just a rectangle approximating the deck of a multihull vessel. These plywood 'bases' will be able to rotate about their centers in order to encounter the prevailing winds at different inclinations. At the moment I have collected a couple of large diameter PVC tubes that might be incorporated to provide the rotating base to the flat plywood bases, and concurrently get these model rigs well off the ground. I might even be able to attach a tiller arm to the rear of these plywood bases and 'helm them' to their optimum sailing angles.

To keep things reasonable I'd like to keep these model rigs down below 6 foot tall from the plywood 'decks' to the top of the mast? I'm also hoping to fabricate the mast tubes with very minimal size and strength tubing in order to demonstrate that my method of rigging this mast will support a 'normal/conventional-size' mast tube.

PS: I recently unpacked this model of the vessel I took down to the Miami Show in 2005, and it got me hot on the idea again.

    Silence or Noise Attracts Fish?

I forget exactly where it was in this subject thread, and on several other subject threads in this forum body, but there has been some debate as to how much a vessel's engine/prop noise signature is an attractant for fish.

That's why I found this posting so funny...

Ft Lauderdale Boat Show wakes up to Catamarans

The Fort Lauderdale International Boat Show set for Nov. 5-9 will feature an array of catamarans at Catamaran Cove.

With the goal of developing the largest catamaran show in the world, organizers of the 56th annual Fort Lauderdale International Boat Show announced the addition of Catamaran Cove.

Located at the Pier 66 show location, the dedicated catamaran section will feature power and sail catamarans. There will be about 20 catamarans on display, ranging from 35 to 95 feet, from manufacturers that include Gemini, Horizon and Gunboat.

Interesting to hear about this 'change' at Ft Lauderdale Show.

I tried for several years to get a spot at the Lauderdale show to display a model of my proposed 'Gamefishing Cat', but was basically ignored as they were full-up with exhibitors and didn't appear to have any great interest in multihulls. I did manage to get into the 2005 Miami Show (couple of photos in the links provided), but being located over in the 'Strictly Sailing' section bought me limited contact with the powerboat crowd that just might have yielded a progressive client that might have considered the fuel economy and long range aspects of a 'gamefishing under sail' vessel.
I think the boat market is finally returning,...slowly, and I will consider the possibility of getting into next year's show. Brian Eiland, RunningTideYachts.com

    Shoal Draft?

I'd like to hear other replies to this design, as I find a significant number of faults with it. I'll just start with one, 6.5 foot 'shoal draft'.

I think a few of those areas are pretty shallow, particularly the Keys. Who wants a 6.5 draft that needs to get worrisome when you get to 9-10 foot of water?
I think Jimmy is a keen 'flats guy'....(likes to sport fish the salt water flats).

    Dear Oscarvan,
Gamefishing under sail? A great majority of the time spent actually fishing is done at trolling speeds (particularly so with the more recent popularity of flyfishing and light-tackle/stand-up styles). This catamaran can reach those trolling speeds under sail alone, in a silent, effortless, stable manner; and without having to use multiple sails. The single central sail (mainstaysail) is all that's needed to reach trolling speeds, and it can be rolled and stowed in 30 seconds or less, while the engines are engaged for exceptional maneuvering while landing the fish (for tagging :)). I'm well aware that once a large gamefish is hooked, the vessel must get rid of all sail quickly, with minimum effort, and get under power. This unique vessel accomplishes that.

And how about the rigging of the sail plan interfering with the fishing? Not much - look at perspective view. The wishbone boom swings up, to stow totally out of the way while trolling. The entire aft deck is clean except for the two backstays which broadly 'Y' out to either transom. Two short pole outriggers can be swung out from their stowed position up along side these backstays. Its possible that this upside down 'V' formed by the backstays could be rigged with additional trolling clip attachments
