That is exactly what happend after the film Top Gun entered the cinemas. All Air Forces of the western world thought, finding young man, that wanted to become a fighter pilot, would be no problem no more. They found out, that this film attracted the wrong crowd. "Hey Air Force, here I am, make me a pilot like Tom Cruise." Didnt work. But in this case, it may harm a industry.

My owners kids are asking me about it and giving us a good natured hard time about it. I asked them to please not watch it, as from what I have seen so far it is not at all indicative of how it is on there yacht. Unfortunately I don't think I was successful.
I can't wait for them to watch it and the good natured ribbing to start!

There was an article in The Triton about the show. The guy who was hired to be the captain for the show is interviewed in it. He says he doesn't think it will be bad for the industry because it's just a TV show and no "billionaires" would be watching it anyway. Yeah, right.

    Yes.

Go down to your local marina on a Saturday morning, order a coffee and watch any of the idiots at work.

    Always fun!

I'm curious as to why the owner of this vessel let this all go down. I would imagine the boat will see quite a bit of wear due to filming crews and the crew of the boat. If it were mine and I was watching the crew stumble around it hammered - well, that would be the end of that. I too found it off that Miss Warwick Rhode Island wanted to call out the pax due to the drugs when she seems like a bit of a loose canon herself with a drinking problem. Anyways, it's entertaining, but i'm with the rest of the skeptics out there that think this is all staged...

As with anything, they probably made the owner a financial offer that he couldn't refuse.....

Caught three episodes of Below Deck over the weekend. My wife wants me to hire a "CJ" and I want to hire a "Sam"............:D

We had a 155' yacht spend a week at our marina a month or so ago and my buddy who owns the bar said he had never seen a crew drink that much. Maybe the show is not so far off?

It depends on the boat. The stuff I've seen on some boats makes below deck look tame. Stuff I've seen. I saw a female chef get so drunk the crew (who wasn't far behind her) put her in one of those black dock carts and took her down the dock to the boat, they got to the boat and set the cart down, well it tipped up on end and she fell out on her back wearing a sundress with no panties!!!!!

I saw a new steward once, put so much soap in a front load washer that it shutdown with an alarm, soap was coming out of the door all over the place, and the breaker had to be turned off so the door could be opened and they had to shopvac all of the soap out of it, and run it 3 times to get the remainder out.

I saw another run a 20' RIB tender up to the beach so fast, that it skidded 40' up the sand and the yacht had to find a 35' center console to pull it off.

    Hi,

I have seen the same happen to the Captain of a large Motor Yacht in Pier 66, except it was security taking him down the dock in a cart as he obviously couldn't make it himself.

    Hi,

Has he been complaining about the amount of money spent / tips paid by his 12/14 new customers in the time they were there?

It's actually an incredibly cheap show to produce, comparatively.
There's tons of advertising possibilities, product placement, resorts, maybe even the boat itself ponying up, and on and on and on. Problem is that they are going to run out of story lines in four minutes. There's only so many times the crew can get drunk and almost f*ck. And, most grotesquely, zero interesting charter guests will ever come aboard and agree to be filmed. The ones they have had have been ridiculous -- the gay photogs, the douche tech-trepenuer, the bed bug brigade... c'mon. People pay $100K+ a week to "get away" and be anonymous, not to be filmed.

There's a cool show there, somewhere. This isn't it.

The Bed bug one was pure advertising for his company. Come on, who on earth would travel wearing that shirt.

If they want a good show, they need a group of car salesman!!!!!!! That would get real interesting.

I've also seen several stewardesses like the blonde that on any boat they are constantly complaining and constantly sending negative energy through the entire boat. A total disrespect for authority. I've been in those situations like the Captain has and he has remained pretty calm and appears to be a good Captain throughout the show. I've had crew issues with temporary crew even more so than some of those.

Once I had hired A licensed mate and his GF (who was supposed to be stewardess) for a 5 day trip with a lot of people being transported to and from an island (75NM) where they all rented houses, and the owner and his family of 5 stayed on the boat. The crew also had a house off of the boat. Well, the problem was the mate never told his girlfriend that she was getting paid anything!!!!!! So i'd ask her to do pretty normal things and she'd always talk back, so finally after about the 5th day of hearing negativity for every single thing I asked of her. I confronted them after the guests left, because the owner mentioned to make sure she got paid as he got off of the boat for his flight (which I found to be a strange statement at a strange time) and she blurted out that she wasn't getting paid anything and only her expenses were paid. I then told her she was getting paid and she needs to talk to her BF about it because she is indeed getting paid, who was standing next to her, and I walked away. Not to mention they got tipped just under $2000 (between both of them) for guests that were on board less than 5 days and the boat was under 65'.

No way they deficit financed this by handing the owner any money -- if anything, they sold it to him as free advertising for the boat, in their charter off-season, and that they would deliver guests willing to pay a portion of the ticket. They sold it to the owner as, at worst, a financial wash, with him/her/them getting free advertising for the boat, and at best, a huge boon when people flock to charter the yacht after the show becomes the next Keeping Up With The Kardouchians.

Reality TV producers are bottom feeders. They want to exploit Joe Q. Public's desire to get their 15 mins.

If that were the case for the owner, they'd have used the yachts proper name instead of a made up name. It's possible they chartered the boat for the whole season, maybe at a reduced rate, but trust me, the owner is getting compensated......also if you noticed the camera crew must be using one of the guest staterooms because each charter only has 6 guests.

I guess it's a hybrid of the above -- use yacht as set, have charter guests pay to be on TV, insert actors & let the idiocy begin...

How much does the real yacht from Below Deck cost to charter or buy?

    Changed the name for production?

Isn't changing the name of a vessel considered bad luck? Call me superstitious. I wonder if the "mate" position includes a white cap and red shirt for the first three hour tour ........ :p
